WFP Statement | #Gaza

On the morning of 20 July, a 25 truck WFP convoy carrying vital food assistance crossed the Zikim border point destined for starving communities in northern Gaza.

Shortly after passing the final checkpoint beyond the Zikim crossing point into Gaza, the convoy encountered large crowds of civilians anxiously waiting to access desperately needed food supplies.

As the convoy approached, the surrounding crowd came under fire from Israeli tanks, snipers and other gunfire.

We are deeply concerned and saddened by this tragic incident resulting in the loss of countless lives. Many more suffered life-threatening injuries. These people were simply trying to access food to feed themselves and their families on the brink of starvation. This terrible incident underscores the increasingly dangerous conditions under which humanitarian operations are forced to be conducted in Gaza.

Today’s violent incident comes despite assurances from Israeli authorities that humanitarian operational conditions would improve; including that armed forces will not be present nor engage at any stage along humanitarian convoy routes.

There should never, ever, be armed groups near or on our aid convoys, as reiterated on many occasions to all parties to the conflict. Shootings near humanitarian missions, convoys and food distributions must stop immediately. Any violence involving civilians seeking humanitarian aid is completely unacceptable.

We stand firmly by our principles of operating with independence, impartiality and neutrality. It is one of the many reasons why communities trust us.

The World Food Programme continues to call for the protection of all civilians and aid workers delivering life-saving assistance. WFP teams accompanying convoys should not have to risk their own lives in the effort to save others. Without these fundamental conditions in place, we cannot continue providing life-saving support across the Gaza strip.

Gaza’s hunger crisis has reached new levels of desperation. People are dying from lack of humanitarian assistance. Malnutrition is surging with 90,000 women and children in urgent need of treatment. Nearly one person in three is not eating for days. Food aid is the only way for most people to access any food – as the cost of a one-kilogram bag of flour has surged to over USD100 in local markets.

Only a massive scale-up in food aid distributions can stabilize this spiraling situation, calm anxieties and rebuild the trust within communities that more food is coming.

An agreed ceasefire is long overdue. All hostages should be released, and humanitarians should be able to reach the civilian population in Gaza with critical food supplies in a consistent, predictable, orderly and safe manner -- wherever they are across the Gaza Strip.

WFP is ready. We have food supplies nearby, experienced teams on the ground, and proven systems in place to respond at scale. We did it before and we can do it again.

We urgently call on the international community and all parties to advocate for, and facilitate, the delivery of life-saving food aid to starving populations inside Gaza – safely, securely, wherever families are, and without obstruction.

‘Forgive me, mother. This is the path I chose—to help people.’

These were the last words of Rifaat Radwan, who filmed his own murder in Rafah. He was part of a Red Crescent convoy aiding wounded civilians. The convoy—clearly marked, unarmed, with flashing lights—was attacked on March 23, 2025.

For five days, the UN and Red Crescent were denied access to search for the missing rescue workers. When granted entry, they found 15 rescuers buried in a mass grave. The UN and Red Cross have called it the deadliest assault on their workers since 2017.

On April 2, the IDF stated that on March 23, ‘several vehicles were identified advancing suspiciously toward IDF troops without headlights or emergency signals,’ and their movement wasn’t coordinated in advance, prompting troops to open fire on these ‘suspected vehicles.’

However, the paramedic’s video, recovered from his body and verified by The New York Times, shows the convoy’s emergency lights were on, contradicting the IDF’s claim and proving their account of the attack was a lie.

Ce message devrait être défendu par l'ensemble de notre profession. Il rejoint les appels de nos collègues journalistes locaux à travers le monde qui travaillent pour des médias étrangers et qui demandent plus de protection depuis des années.

"On vous écrit alors que deux de nos collègues viennent d’être assassinés. Hossam Shabat et Mohamed Mansour sont morts à Gaza aujourd’hui parce qu’ils étaient journalistes.

Ils s’ajoutent à plus de 200 autres journalistes palestiniens tués au cours des 18 derniers mois, pour avoir été des témoins de la vérité et pour avoir rapporter des histoires de Gaza au reste du monde.

Les journalistes de Gaza méritent reconnaissance. Mais cette reconnaissance n’est même pas le strict minimum de ce qu’ils doivent réellement recevoir. Il existe un impératif moral selon lequel ils doivent recevoir une protection internationale, des accès, un soutien et une indignation mondiale pour leur ciblage systématique. Cela doit se traduire par des actions concrètes – et pas des simples déclarations, des gestes symboliques ou des récompenses. Leur courage doit être égalé par le courage des individus, des organisations et des institutions du monde entier qui défendent la liberté de la presse.

Les journalistes de Gaza méritent bien plus qu'une poignée de main ou un prix. Ils ont besoin de davantage de la part de groupes paralysés par la peur que d'ajouter « de l'huile sur le feu ». Ils méritent un véritable changement, une réelle défense de leurs droits et des protections concrètes, y compris des appels à la levée de l'interdiction imposée aux journalistes internationaux de se rendre dans la bande de Gaza.

Nous, les journalistes Gazaouis, on ne poursuit pas les prix. Ils n’ont pas ou peu d'importance en plein milieu des bombardements quotidiens. On dédie notre vie à montrer la guerre dans l'endroit que nous appelons "chez nous". C’est un devoir pour nous en tant qu'habitants de ce territoire. On aborde notre responsabilité d'informer le monde avec la plus grande gravité et le plus grand sérieux.

Jusqu’à maintenant, le poids de travailler dans Gaza a été porté avec force, avec une détermination inébranlable, avec de la grâce, de l'innovation et une profonde intégrité sur les épaules des journalistes palestiniens – une lourde responsabilité qu’ils ont portée seuls.

Bien que ce soit la période la plus meurtrière de l’histoire pour les journalistes palestiniens, jour après jour, ils continuent, malgré le risque énorme pour leur sécurité et celle de leurs familles.

Par leur sacrifice, ils ont donné au monde entier un accès sans précédent à ce qui se passe à Gaza et en temps réel – des heures innombrables de vidéos, d’innombrables photographies, interviews, récits, statistiques et analyses.

Hossam a écrit sa propre nécrologie à seulement 23 ans,. Elle a été partagée publiquement le jour de sa mort. Ce jeune homme a dit : « Par Dieu, j’ai accompli mon devoir de journaliste. J’ai risqué ma vie pour rapporter la vérité, et maintenant, je suis enfin au repos — quelque chose que je n’ai pas connu au cours de ces 18 derniers mois. »

Personne ne devrait jamais avoir à écrire de tels mots. Aucun journaliste ne devrait avoir à anticiper sa propre disparition comme une fatalité, simplement parce que son métier est pris pour cible. On doit aux journalistes palestiniens des garanties matérielles afin qu’ils puissent continuer à accomplir leur travail précieux avec dignité. C’est ce qu’il faut pour véritablement les reconnaître et reconnaître leurs contributions.
