My first job in the UK 🇬🇧 was pot washing in a fancy hotel kitchen 😭🇬🇧
On one of my first shifts, I decided to impress everybody with my “hardworking Naija spirit” 😂
The pile of pots and plates they expected to last 5 hours of the shift,
Omo I finished everything in 3 hours 😇😆
I was SO proud of myself.
In my mind I was like:
“Now I can relax small… maybe drink water peacefully and observe life” 😌
So I leaned on the dishwasher machine for literally a few minutes watching the chefs cook.
Little did I know…
All the sous chefs were acting supervisors and monitoring spirits 😭
“Chi is finished pot washing.”
I didn't even see the senior chef 🧑🍳 coming. One minute I was watching a man sauté something, the next minute there was a presence beside me.😪
"Right then. Since you're done —"
What followed next, I cannot fully explain with words, but I will try.😪
I changed tissue rolls in every tissue lock on the wall. I replaced the liquid soaps hanging over all the sinks around the kitchen,
I swept a kitchen that was already clean. I emptied bins that were barely full. I dragged bin trolleys OUTSIDE and cleaned them— with my two hands.
I brought out every single cup and plate that I had just washed, dried them AGAIN, and aligned them in the boxes so very carefully 🤣
The man found me work for the remaining two hours.
Every. Single. Minute. Accounted for.⏱️
I stood there arranging cups 🫖I had already arranged, and that's when the education hit me
This is not Naija 🇳🇬. Nobody here cares that you finished early. If they are paying you for 6 hours, you will WORK for 6 hours.😩
There is no "I've finished, let me rest small."
There is no leaning on the machine with your arms folded. There is no watching the chefs cook like you're a food critic.😩
If you finish your task find another one. Clean something. Organise something. Count the spoons and fork if you have to.
JUST LOOK busy. Because the moment they catch you idle, they will not give you rest they will give you purpose.
And their version of purpose at 2pm on a Tuesday is scrubbing a bin trolley in the cold outside.
That day I learned one of the most important lessons of working in the UK:🇬🇧
Your hours belong to them. All of them. Even the quiet ones.
I never leaned on that machine again. 😅

Life of an immigrant is not easy mehn
One minute you are thinking you are close
The next minute there is a white paper after your life
God will make a way
Your name is John.
But they decided to call you Peter.
You then responded and tried to convince them that your name isn't Peter.
But they just kept calling you Peter, and you kept correcting them.
Now you are angry, tired and exhausted.
Can you see how your response to them is unnecessary?
The calling isn't the problem; the response to it is.
If it doesn’t have your name on it, why answer to it?
Stop telling people how to use their free speech and thoughts when you can conveniently ignore them.
Ignorance is as much an asset as it is a liability.
Stop convincing those with made-up minds.
Stop forcing things.
Stop forcing people.
Stop forcing situations.
You are worried sick, and exhausted because you are responding to everything and everybody around you.
Take a break!
Build delay and silence into how you respond to the energy around you.
When they whisper about you being a failure, the question is: Are you? If not, why are you responding?
When they say you are not cut out for greatness, why are you responding if that’s not you?
When they say you are overdoing things, how is their opinion anything to worry about?
Respond only to the energy that feeds the future you are loyal to.
Learn to let silence win.
Have you not been in a situation where you had to share the blame with the guilty person just because you chose to react?
Stop reacting!
Get a large bowl of popcorn and watch the negativity like a movie while you focus on building yourself out.
If you are responding to everything, are you even busy?
The hours in the day are not even enough. How do you have time to think and act on fruitless thoughts that do not bring you joy?
‘I don't have time,’ but you have time to change made-up minds.
Once in a while, move on!
The only reason why you are being pulled down is because you are up there. Engaging will require you to step down; don't.
Stop responding to negativity.
Create a threshold for the energy that warrants your response.
So, ask, is that me? If not, keep moving.
You do not need to justify what is outside your scope. This is simple stuff.
‘They said’ has nothing to do with you.
At best, it is a distraction.
What do you believe?
Who do you think you are?
That's what matters.
Release yourself from the obligation to please those who will never be pleased.
You're writing your own story rather than constantly editing the version others try to impose upon you.
You must remain centred.
This is your life, your journey, your story. Write it on your terms, and let the unnecessary and negative chatter fade into the background where it belongs.

Please I beg you.
Don’t leave Nigeria for uk thinking you can “work” to repay your school fees. It is a trap. It is a lie. It is a pit that will ruin you.
UK authorities will only allow you to work 20hours a week- mostly on minimum wage difficult jobs that won’t pay much.
You will end up doing more than 20hours work a week to repay your loan, your education will suffer and when the uk government catch you working more than 20hours a week- they will deport you.
Please I beg you again.
Don’t borrow money to come to Uk to do masters in a school thinking “I will work and pay it back” or “I will work and pay my school fees”.
It is a lie. It is a setup. It will wreck your life.
The life you want is within your reach.
The extraordinary life you didn't even know you wanted is also within your reach.
A decade ago, I would never have imagined that all I saw in my dreams would one day be the reality I would live in.
I am still on this journey, and I have so much to look forward to, and I have no doubts that I will achieve more than what my mind can see.
Listen!
It is irrelevant on what plane you are standing.
The limitations your environment creates do not count.
What people think is their business to mind.
What matters is that you can envision the journey, and you can commit to doing the boring stuff for as long as it takes.
The future you dream of is no more special than who you are right now.
You need to continue to demonstrate that you can stay the course and show up to that future through your daily actions.
This is how I know this to be true: if any human has achieved the growth I am looking for, then I can achieve it too.
It is a simple yet effective rule of thumb.
If you can see it clearly, that's half the battle.
Make Sense?
Go and be fantastic today.
