That statement may sound harsh, but many people only understand it after learning an expensive lesson.

I just watched this interview where the man shared a painful experience. A colleague he had grown to trust had become a close friend. So close that the colleague had access to his workstation and email.

One day, an email arrived inviting him to indicate interest in a promotion within the organization. His "friend" deleted the email. Management assumed he wasn't interested and moved on to another candidate.

It was only much later, after his manager questioned why he ignored the opportunity, that an investigation was carried out. CCTV footage reportedly showed the colleague accessing his desk, and the colleague eventually admitted to deleting the email.

Whether out of envy, competition, or poor judgment, one simple act changed the course of another person's career.

This is why many world-class organizations have strict information security policies. Your laptop, your email, your passwords, your documents, and your credentials are your responsibility. You are accountable for everything that happens under your login.

In my organization, we are repeatedly reminded:

- Never share your credentials.
- Lock your computer whenever you step away.
- Secure your laptop physically.
- Protect confidential information.
- Treat company systems as your personal responsibility.

Some colleagues even lock their laptops in the hotel safe when going out. Others carry them everywhere. It may seem excessive until you understand what is at stake.

Beyond cybersecurity, there is a broader life lesson.

Maintain healthy relationships at work. Be respectful. Be helpful. Be collaborative. But don't confuse professionalism with unrestricted personal access. Not everyone celebrating your success wants to see you succeed. Protect your privacy. Protect your opportunities. Protect your reputation.

Trust should be earned—not assumed.

Be friendly with everyone, but be careful with access.

Your career is too valuable to leave unguarded.

While Akara (Kosai) and Kuli Kuli may not in general take everyone far up the social ladder, they can surely pay the bills! I have heard stories of women who've used these and others to feed their families, cloth them, pay school fees, and get their kids a better chance in life.

Never disrespect or belittle any legitimate way to earn a living!

As much as we expect much more from the government, especially considering the humongous loans it has been taking and the unprecedented taxes imposed on Nigerians, empowering petty traders is a great initiative.

I remember that some years ago, I was in Benin and visited the popular Oba Market, where government task force personnel were chasing women selling along the roadside. One officer kicked over a woman's tray of tomatoes 🍅, and she started crying.

When I got closer, she told me that she collected the tomatoes from the owner, displayed and sold them, and after making a profit, she returned the owner's capital along with any unsold tomatoes. At the time, the entire tray was worth barely ₦8,000. I remember I handed her ₦5,000 & she was so happy & prayed so much for me.

A grant of ₦100,000 or ₦200,000 would go a long way in improving the lives of women like her.
