WHAT IS ISLAM?
Islam represents the last reiteration of the primordial message of God’s Oneness. It means to submit to the one and only supreme Lord of the universe who is Omnipotent, Omnipresent and the Sustainer of the world and of mankind. The person who submits to the will of God is a Muslim.
Islam emphasizes that God (Allah) is the Creator and the Sovereign, while man is His vicegerent on the earth. This exalts man to the noble and dignified position of being Allah's deputy on earth and endows his life with a lofty purpose: to fulfill the will of Allah on earth. According to the Quran, God created man to be the earth’s master. Man can attain supremacy over nature and the world only through knowledge and work, therefore, through science and action.
Islam teaches that all men are the creatures of God and that they are all equal. Any discrimination based on color, class, race, or territory is unfounded and illusory, and a remnant of the days of ignorance that chained men down to servitude.
Allah has revealed His guidance through His prophets & revealed holy books or scriptures to a number of his Messengers. Muhammad is the last Messenger and Prophet of God, & the Qur’an is the final revelation from God to humanity.
Islam’s teachings are simple and intelligible, free from superstitions and irrational beliefs. The Oneness of Allah, the Prophethood of Muhammad (may peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and the concept of life after death are the basic articles of its faith. All of the teachings of Islam flow from those basic beliefs. There is no hierarchy of priests, no farfetched abstractions, no complicated rites and rituals.
Islam is a complete way of life & not a religion in the common and distorted sense, for it does not confine its scope to one's private life, and is present, & provides guidance in every field of human existence.
God has no partners or associates who share in His divinity or authority and that God is transcendent, unlike His creations, and thus has no physical form, & doesn’t exist in any material object.
In Islam, there is no semblance or likeness of Him, although mankind may aspire to exhibit various attributes of God, such as justice or mercy. God has no offspring, no race, no gender, no body, and is unaffected by the characteristics of human life.
Human beings are considered fundamentally “Muslims” in their original spiritual orientation, but being unique creations endowed with abilities of reason, judgement, and choice, they may remain on a God-conscious, righteous path towards divine reward, or may veer away as a consequence of upbringing and life-choices. The Quran emphasizes that there is no compulsion in religion.
Muhammad’s role as the final prophet of God was to confirm the authentic teachings of previous prophets and his life serves as a perfect model of how to practice Islam fully.
Muslims believe in Angels, unseen beings who worship God and carry out God’s orders throughout the universe.
Muslims believe that on the Day of Judgment, humans will be judged for their actions in this life. The knowledge of the Day is with God alone; none can reveal its time but He. (Quran 7:187).
Divine decree, an article of faith in Islam, means that whatever happens in one’s life is preordained, and that believers should respond to the good or bad that befalls them with thankfulness or patience. This concept does not negate the concept of “free will;” since humans do not have prior knowledge of God’s decree, they do have freedom of choice.
The Quran says “God places no burden on a soul greater than it can bear”. Hence, it dispels asceticism or celibacy. The material world is not Satan’s kingdom, and the body is not the seat of sin. In the Christian Gospels, God is the Father. In the Quran, God is the Master. Allah Akbar ‘God is Great’ implies no deity worthy of worship except Allah.
