Living in a war zone, you see all kinds of injuries that don't make sense from a distance. Sometimes a nearby blast can cause internal bleeding without any immediate signs, and you only realize you're hurt minutes later. Sometimes a bullet can ricochet, losing most of its energy before it hits, so it doesn't have the force to penetrate or cause a deep wound.
