Since we’re on #AprilFoolDay, let’s debunk the lie of “the stolen land” by reading the “Filastin” newspaper during the Ottoman occupation until the establishment of the “Arab” countries and Israel.

The “Filastin” newspaper, owned by the Christian Ottoman Issa Daoud Al-Issa who resided in the Jerusalem administrative region during the Ottoman occupation, is the oldest Arabic newspaper to have spoken under the name “Palestine.”

I started reading the newspaper’s archive last week (available from 1911-1914 / 1921-1948) and am still at the beginning. However, I wanted to start publishing some interesting stuff from today.

The newspaper was initially issued weekly, and quickly became two times a week until it was closed by the Ottoman authorities in November 1914. Upon its renewed publication in 1921, it was issued three times a week, and starting from September 1929, it appeared as a daily newspaper.

In its early issues, the newspaper introduced itself as a “constitutional Ottoman newspaper serving the public interest.” Later on, the newspaper leaned towards Arab unity.

The thread will be long, and I may continue to publish for weeks. But my goal in this thread is to shed light on hidden facts that are not adequately disclosed. The focus will not be on the conflicts between the Zionists (who were referred to as Israelis at the time) and the Ottomans/Arabs, but rather on events that I believe are not published sufficiently or known at all.

I will share excerpts from the newspaper from its early days under Ottoman rule, but I believe the Arab perspective on the name #Palestine in the 1920s is a good start for the thread.

بما أننا في الأول من نيسان واليوم هو يوم #كذبة_اول_نيسان قررت كشف كذبة "الأرض المسروقة" عبر قراءة جريدة "فلسطين" أيام الإحتلال العثماني وحتى تأسيس الدول "العربية" و #إسرائيل في الأربعينات.

نبذة عن الجريدة:
جريدة "فلسطين"، لمحررها العثماني المسيحي "عيسى داود العيسى" الذي كان يقيم في منطقة متصرفية القدس الشريف (قدس شريف مُتصرفليغى/Kudüs-i Şerif Mutassarıflığı) أيام الإحتلال العثماني، هي أقدم جريدة بالعربية تحدثت باسم "فلسطين".

بدأت في الأسبوع السابق بقراءة أرشيف الجريدة (متوفر من 1911-1914 / 1921-1948)، وما زلت في البدايات، لكن رغبت بأن يكون النشر ابتداءً من تاريخ اليوم.

صدرت الصحيفة بصورة أسبوعية، وسريعًا جدًا أصبحت تصدر مرتين في الأسبوع حتى تم إغلاقها على يدي السلطات العثمانية في نوفمبر 1914. ومع تجدد صدورها خلال سنة 1921، صدرت ثلاث مرات أسبوعيًا، وبدءًا من سيبتمبر 1929 ظهرت كصحيفة يومية.

قدّمت الصحيفة نفسها في أعدادها الأولى بوصفها "صحيفة عثمانية دستورية جاءت لخدمة المصلحة العامة". ولاحقًا انحازت الصحيفة إلى الوحدة العربية.

سيكون الثريد طويلاً وربما سأستمر بالنشر لأسابيع، ولكن هدفي الأساسي الإضاءة على حقائق غير ظاهرة للعلن بشكلٍ كافٍ، فلن يكون التركيز على الخلافات بين الصهاينة (الذين كانوا يسمون إسرائيليين حينها) وبين العثمانيين/العرب، وإنما سأركز على أحداث لا أعتقد أنها تُنشر بشكل كاف أو معروفة أصلاً.. كالأوضاع المعيشية حينها والحدود والسكان والتغييرات المستمرة بالوضع السياسي.

كنت سأبدأ بنشر مقتطفات من أيام بداية صدور الجريدة تحت حكم العثمانيين ولكن أعتقد أن هذه الصورة تُعتبر بداية جيدة لنكتشف كيف كان رأي "العرب" في العشرينات باسم #فلسطين
