Mumbai has 1.6 sq m of open space per person, London has 31.7 sq m.

Mumbai’s public land is not “vacant land”. A group of 127 architects, urban designers and allied professionals under the Mumbai Architects Collective has warned against using public and ecological assets for development without wider public discussion.

Their message is simple: parks, playgrounds, mangroves, salt pans, open spaces and other public lands are vital to Mumbai’s environment and quality of life, and should be protected for future generations.

Development should strengthen the city, not diminish the shared assets that keep it liveable.

CCTV surveillance at garbage hotspots:

BMC in a meeting on Saturday directed all ward offices to identify and permanently eliminate Garbage Vulnerable Points (GVPs) and install CCTV cameras at such locations to crack down on offenders through stringent penal action. Mumbai currently has 231 identified GVPs, of which 49 have been eliminated so far, while CCTV surveillance has been installed at 73 locations to deter illegal dumping and monitor repeat offenders.

In last year's Community Day, one of the most viral features was Pothole Alerts. The fact that a company could build up a country wide database of potholes, poorly designed speed breakers and general road quality blew people's minds.

Well that feature is finally going live!

We've started rolling out Pothole+ Alerts to our Gen 2 and above customers (450 Apex, 450 X, and Rizta Z).

This has been one of those ideas we've wanted to build for a long time. In fact, almost 9 years.

Every Ather ships with onboard compute and connectivity. Over time that connectivity has allowed us to build large data sets and build features for our owners on top of those. Pothole+ is probably the best implementation of that yet.

The challenge was never the idea. It was the data. You need lakhs of connected scooters riding the same roads before you have enough fleet intelligence to make something like this work. Today, we finally have that.

If you're navigating, your Ather can now alert you about potholes, broken patches, uneven roads, and speed bumps ahead. You'll see it on the dashboard, hear it through the scooter, and, if you're wearing Halo (our smart helmet) or even a Bluetooth headset, through that as well.

But the more exciting part is what comes next.

Navigation has always been about finding the fastest route. Now, it can also help you find the smoothest one, using road intelligence built using millions of kilometres ridden by the Ather community.

Pothole+ Alerts are just the beginning. We are going to build a ton more on top of this data set!

BMC on Monday appealed to residents in parts of the western suburbs and the island city to filter and boil drinking water after complaints of muddy tap water surfaced following heavy rainfall in the catchment areas of the reservoirs that supply to Mumbai. BMC said its Water Engineering Department has initiated measures at water treatment plants to reduce turbidity and is carrying out adequate chlorination to ensure the water remains disinfected and safe for use. However, as a precaution, residents have been advised to filter and boil water before drinking until the situation improves.

In the wake of Wednesday's car fire inside the northbound tunnel of the Mumbai Coastal Road, BMC have reiterated the emergency safety protocol that motorists must follow in the event of an incident inside the tunnel. The civic body has said the tunnel is equipped with multiple safety systems, including emergency telephones, a public address system, fire extinguishers and emergency cross passages, to facilitate safe evacuation during emergencies.

Climate change is quietly adding to Mumbai's sleep crisis, with a new global analysis estimating that residents lose 84 hours of sleep annually – or roughly 10.5 nights of sleep -- because of high night-time temperatures.

Roughly five hours of this sleep deprivation can be directly attributable to climate change, according to the analysis of 1,338 cities done by not-for-profit Climate Central. @ClimateTrendsIN

While many often speak about @mybmc Fixed Deposits that look huge in numbers but one needs to understand that more than 50% of this amount is actually Provident Fund, Pension, Gratuity fund (of it’s employees), trench deposits, contractor deposits etc.

Am sharing a break up for better understanding here from the 2026-27 BMC budget.

BMC’s fixed deposits (FD's), which had consistently grown for over a decade—from ₹43,285 crore in 2014-15 to a peak of ₹91,690 crore in the year 2021-22.

The peak was largely due to the 50% premium concession, which incentivized builders to quickly pay premiums for additional FSI and fungible compensatory areas.

I know there is debate about BMC & State Govt handling of Mumbai Rains. There is always room for improvements but given the intense extreme rain event of 1200mm in just 8 days they did decent enough job. Any city in the world would have struggled. BMC & all politicians across party lines in Maharashtra are very corrupt which has created other problems which deserves criticism but handing of extreme rain events they have got considerably better. #MumbaiRains
