​1323 Invasion: Ulugh Khan (Muhammad bin Tughlaq) invaded Srirangam ( TN) via water while camping in Samayapuram, intending to destroy the temple and idols.

​Sacrifice of 12,000 Vaishnavas: Unprepared devotees held off the invasion and gave their lives in massive numbers along the Kaveri and Kollidam rivers so that sages like Swami Vedanta Desikar and Pillai Lokachar could safely evacuate the deity (Utsavamurthy) and sacred scriptures.

​40 Years in Exile: The sages continued worshiping the deity in hiding for 40 years until Hindu forces regained power and restored the deity to Srirangam.

Srirangam remains the largest functioning temple today, and festivals like Panguni Uthiram can still be celebrated, because of this sacrifice—ending with the call to
"Never forgive, never forget"
