The UAE Is Fueling Sudan’s War. U.S. Complicity Helps Make It Possible. Interesting read on the decline of American influence in the Horn of Africa and the delegation to UAE of a sub-imperial role. https://t.co/C5aG5MXVqu
Somoud appears poised to do a full court press in NY this week on their anti-war message, but that message would be so much stronger, and credible, if Hamdok and the rest of Somoud's leadership moved themselves and their families out of the UAE, stopped taking UAE money and related support, clearly condemned the crimes of the RSF. Being anti-war doesn't make you pro-SAF, nor does being anti-RSF. https://t.co/LlUPUQPCwr
Fascinating look inside the geopolitics of the port of Berbera. Worth reading. "Leaving Berbera, I could feel its untapped potential. Ethiopia is close to the UAE and Israel. It has no qualms about Somaliland's diplomatic deal with the former. But I wondered whether Somaliland's decision to establish diplomatic relations with Israel only made it more isolated in the wider region." https://t.co/5oSU0ARNSI
The problem with this argument is that the U.S. has not provided the OPCW with the intelligence that it has on chemical weapons use in Sudan. So what exactly is the OPCW supposed to investigate? A public accounting from the NYTimes? The solution he is proposing is no solution at all. Perhaps that is the intention? https://t.co/ziWUqxdsTn
The Ruto Government would make it illegal to export gold unless it has been processed locally and passed through approved government channels. This is an important step but only if Ruto also pledges that he will prevent the RSF's illegal gold from washing through Nairobi. https://t.co/WgBAQA2HKy
“The scale and the systematic nature of the looting demonstrates this is no longer an isolated or opportunistic case, but rather a broader illicit trade taking Sudan’s cultural identity and historical legacy.”
"At least 76 heritage sites and 20 museums have been ransacked by the RSF, carting off an archaeological haul worth more than $150m. One museum was turned into a barracks. The National Museum lost almost ⅔ of its inventory, comprising nearly 100,000 artifacts."https://t.co/BdAOXxhGx1

8 Senate Democrats are petitioning for not only a total arms embargo on Sudan but sanctions on the country's gold sector as well. Taken alongside the Trump Administration's push for an arms embargo--and their media push around that; coupled with the coordinated Israeli media campaign today on Sudan's use of chemical weapons, this constitutes a pretty withering pressure campaign against Khartoum authorities. Interestingly, I would say that this is a similar level of pressure that we saw at the height of the Darfur conflict 20 years ago, except that it is missing any real grassroots activism to go along with it. Still, I suspect that this will make Burhan's trip to the UN in 2 weeks much less triumphal than he wants it to be. The question is whether he comes prepared to offer any concessions at all, unlikely, or will instead dig his heels in? https://t.co/Kq0gcVYZGV
