Boycott calls against GMMTV grow after fans accuse company of unfairly blaming security staff
GMMTV is facing mounting backlash under the hashtag #แบนGMMTV after many Thai fans accused the company of unfairly blaming a security guard involved in a physical altercation with a Chinese fan at its event during the 2026 International Book Fair in Bangkok.
Videos circulating online show security staff forcibly removing the fan following a dispute over queueing. The fan says she was wrongly accused of cutting the line and was dragged and restrained by security. Other videos appear to show the fan kicking at a Thai staff member during the confrontation. Thai fans cite the footage as evidence she initiated the physical altercation, while the fan maintains she was wrongfully removed. GMMTV has not said who started the incident.
GMMTV said its preliminary investigation found an outsourced security worker used more force than necessary in handling the situation. The company apologized, suspended the security worker pending a full investigation, denied rumors it had filed a lawsuit against those involved, and said it would review its event management procedures.
The company's response has divided fans. Chinese fan clubs have demanded greater accountability and continued calling for a boycott, while many Thai fans argue GMMTV failed to acknowledge the fan's alleged conduct before suspending the security guard, helping propel #แบนGMMTV to trend on Thai social media.
