On this day in 1930, the once great city of Constantinople changed its name to Istanbul.
Istanbul comes from the Greek phrase "στην Πόλη" (stim boli), meaning "to the City." Greeks for over a 1,500 years and even to this day, referred to Constantinople as "The City."
