While we wait for the jury in the Lindsay Clancy case, I have one request for journalists, podcasters, media outlets, and social media sites that have followed this trial: whatever verdict ultimately comes in the horrific and brutal killing of three beautiful children, step away from the arguments about guilt, innocence, and criminal responsibility for just 10 minutes and read what I have known for years in my justice file editorial linked below.

Massachusetts has a dark history in the way it has treated people, or actually not treated people, with mental illness and disabilities that continues to this very day.

When the jury's work is finished, ours should begin.

Whatever the verdict, Massachusetts must confront what this trial has revealed and demand meaningful changes to a mental health system that has failed vulnerable people and their families for generations. I've watched it fail from the vantage point of my courtroom.

In the meantime, my thoughts and prayers are with Cora, Dawson, and Callan.

An experienced American prosecutor just stood up in a courtroom in 2026, during a triple-homicide trial, and suggested in her closing argument that a mentally ill woman should have attempted suicide a different way.

Our government has become disturbingly comfortable using its power this way. Our healthcare system is broken. Our institutions are failing catastrophically.

Cora, Dawson, and Callan should all be alive.

Lindsay should not be sitting in this courtroom. She should be mentally well, after receiving adequate treatment, and living with her family. Instead of confronting the systemic failures that helped create the circumstances of their deaths, the government stood before a jury and criticized how Lindsay tried to kill herself.

We should all be outraged.

@defense_diaries NP Becca Jo said LC was getting 7-9 hours of sleep. just because she’s “sleeping” doesn’t mean it’s restorative REM sleep. med induced sleep isn’t even close to naturally being able to sleep. sleep forced by meds can actually make symptoms worse
