Labour disruptions in the country’s rail and maritime sectors have far-reaching impacts — affecting supply chains, key industries and Canada’s economic stability. With several collective agreements set to expire in 2026, the risk of future disruptions is growing.

A new report from the Standing Senate Committee on Transport and Communications examines recent challenges — including the use of section 107 of the Canada Labour Code to end work stoppages — and proposes measures to strengthen dispute resolution, improve supply chain reliability and support Canada’s position as a reliable trading partner.
