Parce que plus de la moitié des 30 noms de famille les plus courants au Québec ont des origines normandes, les Normands formaient le plus grand groupe de colons français en Nouvelle-France, suivis des Bretons et des Poitevins. Le navire de Samuel de Champlain, le Don de Dieu, utilisé lors de la fondation de la ville de Québec, comptait en grande partie un équipage normand, tandis que Champlain lui-même était originaire de Brouage.

Un vitrail dans une église de Mortagne-au-Perche, en Normandie, illustre un départ de colons normands vers le Québec, avec l’inscription « N’oubliez pas Dieu ni la France ».

La devise du Québec est ensuite devenue « Je me souviens ».
