For generations, malnutrition, poverty & colonial-era famines limited the physical growth potential of much of the subcontinent. Took just 2 generations of better nutrition, healthcare & living conditions, and the results are starting to show. As populations move further away from those periods of severe deprivation, the long-term biological effects likely diminish, allowing more people to better realize their genetic potential.
Of course, turning improved physical dev into consistent podium finishes requires world-class coaching, infra, sports science & equip upgrade. Higher protein simply won't cut it.
Reading Marc Baer on this has been hilarious. At one point he literally segways from "modern historians prefer crisis and transformation to decline" to "and then the Janissaries lynched the reformist Sultan and the public looted the state treasury"
Apparently lots academics now deny the decline of the Ottoman empire. The motte is pedantry about the empire's middle period being "stagnant" rather than "declining", and the bailey is dismissing the whole concept of Ottoman decline as an orientalist myth.
Everyone tells me that Elon Musk is a fascist because he could "solve world hunger" for a mere 3 billion dollars, but MacKenzie Bezos has burned through 26 billion dollars of her ex husband's money and accomplished absolutely nothing of note.
Another "hidden" area where the United States absolutely dominates the rest of the world, including Western Europe:
wastewater/sewage treatment
Waste water treatment infrastructure is pervasive in the United States. Even a low income area in rural Georgia has a state of the art waste water treatment facility. Western Europe has good coverage, but on a per capita basis, their treatment plants serve a larger population. This indicates they aren't as pervasive as they are in the US.
In contrast, China (even Japan) has sparse coverage despite its large dense population. India's coverage is even lower.
A lot of accounts on twitter incorrectly use examples of impressive skylines (ie Dubai, Shanghai, and now recently Mumbai/Gurgaon/Hyderabad) to show that their region is "developed". However, this is the real indicator of development.
Sewage treatment plants don't make for mediagenic ribbon cutting ceremonies. They don't win you votes. But the long term population health benefits are immense: lower rates of childhood diseases, longer healthief life spans, less stunting (and the associated cognitive and physical deficits associated with it).
“Sir -46 percent is already a historical low! But I think if we just play our cards right we mi-“
“Kill the endangered ponies."
"W-what?"
"Ban social media for everyone under 16."
"B-but sir!"
"Abolish life sentences for murderers and give all of them lighter sentences."
“S-sir… you cannot possibly go any lower! Please stop.”
“Legalize incest.”
“SIR!”
“I quit.”
My favorite recurring bit in these End Times has been the ongoing collaboration between all of the most insane people in the U.S. and Israel to birth the Apocalypse Cow
It is generally underrated how peaceful and large-scale political reform preceded various European countries' industrial rise:
- The Glorious Revolution in 1688 laid the groundwork for the Industrial Revolution.
- Prussia's Stein-Hardenberg reforms in 1807 abolished serfdom and guilds, and enabled municipal self-government, later enabling Germany to become a scientific and industrial powerhouse.
- Switzerland's unification as a modern state in 1848 created a finely balanced, decentralized government that abolished internal tolls and triggered a massive railway buildout. Subsequently, Switzerland outgrew all other European nations.
Studying these reforms is crucial for everyone who wants to see large-scale political change today. The Glorious Revolution is a great first chapter in such study.

Ammianus Marcellinus, the great historian of Rome, finds himself excluded from the charmed world which Augustine (of Hippo) is able to enter. Referring to Roman aristocrats, Ammian remarks that when food becomes short, these men were prepared to deport all foreign professors of liberal arts, while retaining 3000 dancing girls [from Peter Brown’s biography of Augustine].
"Martial Race" does not know that the Indian Tulwar is wielded for the draw cut with a strong locked wrist - after limp wristed sword flailing against an unarmed man he gets punched and then falls over himself
As Gurdas Mann sang-Ki Banu Duniya da? Sache badshah Wah Guru jaane :)
I love Germania but some parts of it do come across as Tacitus asking a roided chudbarian if his people have ever done anything wrong, and blissfully believing whatever he tells him.
"So in Rome we have this thing called adultery."
"We don't do that in GERMANY"
"Wow. Amazing."
