With our mission to shed a spotlight on Fern's story and the bile bear trade, to raise awareness and ultimately donations for a worthy cause, we want to share with you each day some of the surprising facts about the trade Fern was rescued from.

Did you know Bear bile is used in some traditional medicines because it contains ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA), a compound with genuine medical uses for certain liver and gallbladder conditions. But bears aren't needed to produce UDCA. It can be manufactured as a purified medicine without extracting bile from bears.

Why does this matter?

Tens of thousands of bears have been affected by bear-bile farming across Asia. Bears can be kept for years while their bile is repeatedly extracted, with welfare investigations documenting chronic injuries, infections, deformities, inadequate housing and severe stress. So while UDCA can be a legitimate medicine, using bears as its source is not medically necessary, and the same animals can suffer repeatedly over many years.
