It began at 5,200 meters up in the Himalayas.
Seven minutes later, after plunging more than 3,000 vertical meters and racing roughly 22 kilometers down the valley, the disaster reached the Gyirong Port.
Twenty-seven buildings were flattened.
At a press conference this morning, authorities in Xizang released their most detailed reconstruction yet of how the August 26 disaster unfolded.
According to assessment by the Chinese Academy of Sciences based on remote-sensing data, material transmitted from the disaster site, field surveys and interviews, at 10:52 AM Beijing time on August 26, a glacier in Nepal fractured at an elevation of about 5,200 meters, triggering a massive ice-rock avalanche.
The collapsing mass plunged rapidly to around 4,000 meters, scouring the mountainside and developing into a giant debris flow. It then surged at high speed for roughly 22 kilometers before reaching China's Gyirong Port, at an elevation of about 1,800 meters, 7 minutes later.
The impact flattened approximately 0.7 square kilometers of the area, destroying 27 buildings along with their associated facilities.
And now, we can even begin to reconstruct the final minutes before the catastrophe, almost frame by frame.
Photographer Heimu (黑沐) has spent years documenting mountains and wilderness in Xinjiang and Xizang. On the day of the disaster, he happened to be nearby preparing for a climb.
His camera captured an extraordinarily rare visual timeline.
8:27 AM. He arrived at a parking area in China's Gyirong Valley scenic area and prepared to begin his climb.
The mountains across the border in Nepal appeared completely normal.
9:33 AM. Still no obvious sign that anything was wrong.
10:21 AM. The main body of the glacier had still not undergone a collapse. But in Heimu's camera, dust had already begun to rise from below the glacier.
Around 10:30 AM. He began hearing repeated rumbling sounds in the distance.
At the time, he had no idea that a disaster of this magnitude was already beginning to unfold.
One detail in these images is particularly noteworthy: Before the glacier underwent its large-scale collapse, the rock mass beneath already begun to shift and lose stability.
Then the ice and rock started plunging downward together.
By 10:52 AM, the time authorities identify as the onset of the major ice-rock avalanche, the chain of cascading hazards had been fully set in motion.
What truly unsettles me about this is not just this one collapse. It is the long-term change behind.
Some people still dismiss global warming as exaggerated or even imaginary. After the extreme heat Europe endured this summer, I wonder whether at least some of them have changed their minds. In fact, the deeper background to this disaster may well be climate warming.
Over the past 60 years, China has completed three national glacier inventories. The data show that on the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, the first inventory recorded about 61,000 square kilometers of glacier area. The latest, the third inventory, shows that this has fallen to about 39,000 square kilometers.
Kang Shichang, director of the Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said that the most dramatic glacier shrinkage has occurred in the southern part of the plateau, including the Himalayas. Over the past 60 years, glacier area in these regions has shrunk by roughly 40 percent. The main reason, he said, is global warming. And he said glaciers around the world are retreating.
On the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau, one direct consequence of glacier melt is the significant expansion of glacial lakes. In the Himalayan region along China's southern border, glacial lake area has been increasing by about 1 percent per year.
There may be a chain of hazards in which one event triggers another:
Glacier retreat. Expanding glacial lakes. Ice avalanches. Ice-rock avalanches. Landslides.
The formation of landslide-dammed lakes. The failure of those natural dams. Debris flows and flash floods growing more destructive as they move downstream.
One disaster can trigger the next, and then the next, a chain of hazards unfolding like dominoes.
This also makes monitoring and early warning so difficult in the Himalayas.
And it is why I increasingly feel that when we talk about climate change, we should not think only about one or two extra degrees on a thermometer.
In the high Himalayas, long-term warming of even a degree or two can mean something very different from simply having a hotter day.
A warming climate is changing the background conditions in which these high-mountain systems operate.
It may not push the first rock over the edge. But it can leave more and more rocks standing closer to that edge.
China has pledged to peak its carbon dioxide emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality before 2060.
However, the atmosphere has no borders. None of us can solve this alone.
The extreme heat Europe endured this summer, and the increasingly severe wildfires the United States has faced in recent years, are reminders of the same underlying reality.
Climate change is usually not the match that starts a wildfire. But higher temperatures, drier vegetation and longer fire seasons can make that match far more likely to ignite something larger, faster and harder to control.
Climate change may not be the sole "culprit" behind every catastrophe.
But it is changing the conditions that shape how often disasters occur, how large they become, and how quickly they unfold.
And climate change does not always arrive carrying its own name.
Sometimes it arrives as a heat wave.
Sometimes as a forest on fire.
And sometimes as a wall of ice and rock crashing down from the Himalayas.
