From “Aham Brahmasmi” to “Amhi Cockroach” the sad deterioration of Indian culture.

India has a painting tradition spanning over 2,000 years.
We have paintings of gods and goddesses,
Buddhas and Taras, epics, myths, battles, courtly life and entire worlds of imagination.

But surprisingly, you rarely find a portrait of a person simply being portrayed as themselves.

The artist was far more interested in depicting the divine, the symbolic and the story than in saying:
“This is him. Remember his face - even if he is a king.”

One of the earliest surviving painted portraits in Indian art is found in the inner ambulatory of the Brihadisvara Temple at Thanjavur.
It depicts Rajaraja Chola I with his guru, Karuvurar.

And there is something wonderfully awkward about it.

The king is not standing alone, dramatically presenting himself to posterity.
He is shown with his guru, almost as if the painting is saying:

“Yes, I am the king… but let me first establish who my guru is.” 😄

Fast forward a thousand years, and we have gone from a civilisation where even kings and queens were rarely portrayed as individual subjects to an endless stream of self portraits, selfies, mirror shots, crying videos and content.
