At a meeting of the International Astronomical Union 20 years ago today, astronomers vote on a definition of a "planet." The new criteria:
🌘 Must orbit its host star
🌓 Must be mostly round
🌒 Must be massive enough to clear away other objects of similar size in its orbit
Pluto fails on the third condition and becomes a dwarf planet.
@DonaldMills142 Back in the 2000s "we have a rocket with a price tag of $40M which you can launch 17t and recover, 23t if you have to, and you can amortize it with reuse into a 15-20t TLI machine" = shit a brick in excitement. But when 11,000 Starlinks is a beginner constellation, it's unsat.
The concept of the runway is extremely important in rapid Spaceflight. You can have large processing areas like hangar X or Area 59 at the Cape with multiple lanes, but they all funnel down to 1-2 launch pads. So the launch pad hangar, transport erector, and pad itself are the "runway" just like a runway at the airport only has one plane on it at a time.
On Dragon this was visceral in it's importance. Dragon takes several months to process between splashdown to relaunch. When its on the runway howver, it's getting in the way of starlink missions that are going off every couple of days. So to the overall business, finding efficiencies to remove 1 hour of processing on the runway can be more impactful than removing a whole day of work in Dragonland.

@DonaldMills142 One of the most fun lessons to me, which from the timeline I think must have been learned during the Starlink R&D period, is that while Falcon 9/Heavy gives you just about everything you could have asked for in 2004, it's very inadequate for building real infrastructure in space.
@DonaldMills142 Yep, beyond the obvious it's "Falcon rebuilt on lessons learned from Falcon". Then they'll push the envelope again and get to learn whole new lessons as cadence picks up.
