I don’t understand how it is possible that a wealthy, blessed nation like ours can’t deal with these issues. When I was writing NEXT I spent a lot of time going over the primary population data about indigenous people and issues. What I learned shocked me. 2/n

Indigenous lifespans in Canada are more like those in developing nations. Health stats, prison pop over-representation, children in foster care, lack of housing and clean water, poor educational outcomes, etc etc. The numbers are horrific. 3/n

Our nation’s original sin must be remembered. But tears are not enough. The ongoing issues confronting indigenous Canadians is what I’m thinking about today. We can’t fix the past but we have the means to deal with on-going issues now. Now we need focus and will. 5/5

What really puts it into perspective is denominator. The indigenous population is Canada is SMALL. No matter how it adds up (status on and off reserve, Inuit and Métis, self identification) it’s a couple of million. Tops. On reserve status Indians are only about 400K souls. 4/n
