A 17-year-old in Iowa boiled beets in her chemistry class and turned them into stitches that change color when your wound gets infected. Her name is Dasia Taylor. It started as a science fair project.

She wanted a low-tech version of the "smart stitches" Tufts researchers built in 2016. Those used thread wired up with sensors and a tiny chip that pinged your phone if something went wrong. Cool, but useless without a phone or a hospital that can afford it.

Her version doesn't need any of that. Healthy skin is slightly acidic, like lemon juice but much milder. When bacteria grow in a wound, the chemistry flips and turns more like soap or baking soda.

Beet juice has a quirk. The same red pigment that stains your fingers when you cook it shifts color based on what it touches. Bright red on healthy skin. Dark purple on infected skin. The switch lines up with infection almost exactly.

She tested ten threads before finding a cotton-polyester blend that soaked up the dye and changed color within five minutes. That was the prototype.

Around 1 in 40 American surgeries end in an infection at the cut, costing hospitals more than $3 billion a year. In poorer countries the rate is closer to 1 in 9. In parts of Africa it's 1 in 6. In some Ethiopian hospitals, up to a quarter of surgery patients leave with an infection.

The whole game is catching it early. Spot it in time and antibiotics handle it. Miss the window and the patient is back on the operating table.

Dasia filed a patent in 2021 and started a medical device company called VariegateHealth in 2022. The stitches haven't been tested on real patients yet. New medical device patents can take a decade. She's also looking into a side benefit: the beet pigment kills bugs like E. coli and Klebsiella in lab tests.

Smart stitches need a phone to read them. Hers just need eyes.

After more than 15 years, she had to have another procedure.

The doctor asked her:
“Have you had a procedure like this before?”

She was surprised and said:
“Just when I miscarried…”

The doctor paused for a bit and said:
“It’s clear the procedure back then wasn’t done right… there’s major damage to the uterine lining.”

In that moment alone…
She understood everything.

Not because she couldn’t be a mother…
But because someone made a mistake… and never told her.

Years and she lived with guilt that wasn’t hers.

Some stories aren’t about people who failed…
Some are about people who were wronged and stayed silent.

Not every woman who couldn’t get pregnant was let down by her body…
Sometimes the truth is uglier:

So what a law like this actually means is that more people will get away with abusing children & that more children could be murdered. It’s bad.

1. Frighteningly, a law like this incentivizes murder — if it’s capital punishment either way, and the perpetrator feels like they are less likely to be caught if there are no witnesses, guess what they’ll do?

2. It silences victims. Most sexual abuse is by family members or trusted adults — fathers, teachers, step-fathers, pastors, older brothers — think, for example, if the victim’s older brother told them that if they TELL ANYONE what he did he could be murdered and it would be all their fault — chances are those kids will stay silent.

In 1970, if a woman arrived at an emergency room after being raped, the staff moved fast. They cut away her clothing. They washed blood from her skin. They cleaned her wounds, combed debris from her hair, sutured, swabbed, stabilized.

They saved her life.

And in the same efficient hour, they destroyed the case.

The clothing that held fibers and semen was bagged with hospital trash. The fingernails that might have carried skin cells were scrubbed clean. The bruises were documented only as injuries, not as patterns of violence. By the time police arrived, there was often nothing left but a shaken woman and a report that would quietly die in a file.

No one intended harm. Nurses were trained to heal, not to think like investigators. Emergency medicine focused on stopping bleeding and preventing infection. Justice was considered someone else’s department.

Except it wasn’t.

It was the survivor’s.

Virginia Lynch was a nurse who noticed what others had normalized. Born in 1941, she grew up in a culture that treated sexual violence as something shameful, private, better left unexamined. In the ER, she saw the same pattern repeat. A woman would arrive assaulted. Staff would do what they were taught. Hours later, police would ask for evidence that no longer existed.

Prosecutors declined cases. Defense attorneys dismantled what little documentation there was. Survivors were left with a quiet, corrosive message: if it can’t be proven, maybe it didn’t really happen.

Lynch understood something radical for her time — hospitals were not neutral spaces. They were the first crossroads between trauma and accountability. If evidence vanished there, justice rarely followed.

When she began asking why nurses weren’t trained to preserve forensic evidence, the resistance was immediate. Doctors said nursing was about care, not crime. Law enforcement questioned whether nurses could handle chain of custody. Administrators worried about lawsuits and reputation. Beneath all of it was a deeper discomfort: taking sexual assault seriously would require admitting how common it was.

But Lynch kept pushing.

She began designing protocols that did not force a false choice between healing and documentation. Clothing could be preserved without delaying treatment. Injuries could be photographed respectfully. Swabs could be taken with consent. Detailed notes could be written in language that held up in court. Evidence could be secured without turning a survivor into an object.

She saw nurses differently than others did. They were already there first. They saw injuries before they faded. They heard the story before it hardened into a deposition. They had the trust of patients in moments when uniformed officers might not.

If nurses were trained properly, they could protect both the body and the truth of what happened to it.

Out of that insistence came a new field: forensic nursing. Eventually, the role of the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner — SANE — was formalized. These nurses learned evidence collection, trauma-informed interviewing, courtroom testimony, and meticulous documentation. They became the bridge between medicine and the legal system.

Hospitals that adopted these programs saw measurable change. Evidence was preserved correctly. Cases were stronger. Convictions increased. Survivors reported feeling believed instead of processed. The difference was not dramatic technology. It was intention, structure, and training.

By the 1990s, forensic nursing was recognized as a legitimate specialty. Courts accepted forensic nurses as expert witnesses. Nursing schools began offering training programs. What had once been dismissed as unnecessary interference became the standard of care.

Major corporations involved.

Businesses woven into everyday American life, including the company nearly every school uses for student photos.

This was protected.

Investigations obstructed.

Evidence buried or destroyed.

Sweetheart deals granted.

Victims silenced with threats, NDAs, settlements, and intimidation.

This was financed and laundered through shell companies and complex money trails.

It was international.

Multiple countries.

Multiple jurisdictions.

Not one island. Not one network.

Recruitment pipelines where children were groomed, coerced, and forced to recruit other children.

Abuse discussed casually.

Suffering treated like logistics.

Blackmail.

Documentation used as leverage.

Powerful people insulated by proximity to politics, royalty, and intelligence-adjacent circles.

Out of thousands of children referenced, named, or implied, only around thirty are accounted for.

The rest are missing.

Erased.

Unanswered.

People joking about what they’ve done.
Joking about what they plan to do next.

This is not conspiracy.

This is documentation.

I do not know how one could witness what happened on Epstein Island and not turn away. This is the kind of evil that makes hell seem embarrassed. No deity, no devil, no myth feels sufficient to hold it.

What is in these files is so grotesque, so deliberate, so organized, that every single party involved must be held accountable. Not some. Not a few. All of them.

Your politics do not matter here. Democrats and Republicans are named. Celebrities and CEOs are named. Corporations are named. Defending any of them over the safety of children is complicity. We must stand together, united beyond party, fame, or wealth, to end this evil and protect every child.
