It feels fitting that Tarr Béla and Robert Bresson were the only two directors I know of who officially retired from feature filmmaking for over a decade before their deaths, personifications of their particular ascetic, transcendent forms of cinema.
Have always recoiled at calling Tarr or Hou or Tsai ‘slow’, like yeah compared to Hollywood stuff they are certainly less frenetic but there’s always something happening with the camera, the lighting, the gesture of the human body in the frame. Just gotta look with your eyes.
