Overdoses have long been a significant issue in Missouri prisons. So why is this vital information now being withheld? What is MDOC trying to hide?
We are calling on MODOC to publicly explain:
Why are overdose records no longer available?
Why Are Overdose Records Being Hidden?
The Missouri Department of Corrections, which previously provided overdose records upon request, has stopped providing access to this critical information, leaving many questions unanswered.

Language shapes the way we view the world—and the people in it. At Missouri Prison Reform, we believe in recognizing the humanity of every individual, which is why we avoid words like prisoner, offender, felon, or inmate.
Instead, we use person-first language, such as "incarcerated individual" or "resident," to emphasize their dignity and humanity. This approach aligns with the principles of The Marshall Project’s Language Project. Read more about the language project: https://t.co/LbJfvHDXJF
Once we receive the data, we will create detailed reports to expose the truth and hold the system accountable.
The truth will come out, no matter how long it takes.
Missouri Prison Reform has requested 2024 autopsy reports and Death in Custody Reports from the Missouri Department of Corrections. Using the Sunshine Law, we are determined to uncover the facts surrounding deaths in Missouri prisons.

While we are committed to transparency, we want to set clear expectations: this process may take months. This is information the DOC doesn’t want the public to know, and we expect them to delay as long as possible.
“From everything that we hear from people that live inside prisons and work in prisons, it’s easier to get drugs in prison than it is outside, and it should not be that way,” - Lori Curry, MPR Executive Director
