In November 1984, 17-year-old Lisa McVey was riding her bike home after a double shift at a donut shop in Tampa, Florida.

Out of nowhere, a man dragged her off the bike and forced her into his car.

He blindfolded Lisa, pressed a gun to her head and drove to his apartment. For the next 26 hours, he raped and tortured her.

The girl believed she was going to die. But she was determined that if she did, police would catch the man who killed her.

So she paid attention to everything. She peeked under her blindfold whenever she could, counted the steps up to his apartment and pressed her fingerprints onto every surface she could reach in his bathroom.

She also kept him talking and promised to be his girlfriend. She even made up a story that her father was seriously ill and depended on her.

Slowly, it worked. After 26 hours, he drove her back toward her grandmother's house and apologized. Then he told her “Tell your father he's the reason why I didn't kill you."

Every detail she had memorized, from his car to his apartment to the ATM he had stopped at, led police straight to him.

His name was Bobby Joe Long. That year, he killed at least 10 women in the Tampa area. He was arrested on November 16, 1984, and later sentenced to death.

Years later, Lisa joined the same sheriff's office that caught him and became a deputy who helps survivors of sexual violence.

In 2019, when Long was executed, she sat in the front row.

Generally the 1st reaction decent 'normal' people on learning their relative/friend/neighbour is a child sex abuser is outrage and rejection. We are fine incinerating this relationship with the culprit. But think how one can feel losing a father. We love our Dad, we miss our Dad, I still miss him 48 ys later. I miss BUT my relationship is still warm, fuzzy, happy. When you learn your Dad is a paedophile, some react like Sam brother, it is so horrible you have no choice but amputation, rejection. You choose to erase your love for Dad and you sure reject his affection for you. It is worse than losing your paternal figure to Death. In one case, you carry on yearning for their embrace regardless of the years. OTOH, your Dad is a monster and you realise for all these years you loved a monster. Samantha is facing this choice: to still love Dad, to still be allowed to love or reject and lose so much. Denial is better. Kinder. Everybody lies about her Dad and she is allowed not to reject Dad. It is terribly sad. She is heading for either long years of denial in solitude or catching yp with the Truth and mourn the father she thought she once had. A tragedy, real tragedy for 3 innocent people born to Mr Markle Sr.

I dislike Sam but hear me out here. I have met people related to a convicted incestuous paedophile. One trusted the victim, taking her to the local police station, totally supportive. She was proved right as the man was convicted and sent to jail to reflect upon his actions for almost a decade. But there was another relative who never accepted the plaintiff, never accepted the conviction. Never reconciled. For many, many years I was outraged along not understanding why. Then of late I realised.
