The tragic Maai Mahiu accident, which claimed the lives of four members of the Chwele market business community, is a painful reminder of the need for greater responsibility and caution on our roads.

This evening, I joined leaders from Bungoma County at a fundraiser at Friends School Busakala in Kabuchai Constituency to support the burial arrangements for the four traders who lost their lives while travelling back to Chwele from Karatina, where they had gone to source tomatoes.

At the solemn gathering attended by family members, friends and leaders, I conveyed the condolences of His Excellency President William Ruto, my own, and those of the people of Bungoma County and the Parliament fraternity to the bereaved families.

I therefore urge all motorists to exercise patience, discipline and caution on our roads and to remain mindful of other road users. No journey is so urgent, and no destination so important, that it should put a human life at risk.

I continue to commend the Kenya Kwanza Government for initiating key development projects across Bungoma County, including the ongoing construction of the ultra-modern Chwele Market, which will transform trade in the area and provide improved facilities for our traders.

I further asked the leadership of Bungoma County, under Governor Kenneth Lusaka, to ensure that, when the new market is completed and stalls are allocated, the immediate family members of the four traders who died in the accident are prioritised.

May the souls of the departed rest in eternal peace.
