According to experts, the total number of deaths after the devastating earthquake in Venezuela could be measured not in hundreds, but in thousands. Rescuers continue to clear the rubble, with people still trapped under the debris.
The officially confirmed number of deaths has reached 188. Another 1,520 victims have been taken to hospitals and are receiving medical care. This was reported by the President of the National Assembly of Venezuela, Jorge Rodríguez.
Some reports mention tens of thousands of people with whom relatives are still unable to establish contact. Families are posting photos of their loved ones on a special website to inform about their whereabouts.
The earthquake occurred on the evening of June 24. Two series of earthquake tremors with magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5 were recorded at intervals of about 40 seconds. Their epicenters were located about 10 km apart in the state of Yaracuy.
A state of emergency has been declared in the country. The government has declared the coastal state of La Guaira a disaster zone. According to authorities, damaged or lost infrastructure includes about 250 buildings.
Several buildings collapsed in Caracas. Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello reported on the destruction in the districts of Altamira and Palo Grande, including in the residential sector. There are deaths and injuries in various parts of the capital.

The Venezuelan Embassy in Russia reported that it had not received any information about the deaths or injuries of Russian citizens. The diplomatic mission is in constant contact with the Venezuelan authorities and Russians in the country.
The Association of Tour Operators of Russia also stated that there was no information about injured organized tourists from Russia. The main destination for Russian tourists in Venezuela was the island of Margarita, which, according to preliminary data, was not seriously affected, although the earthquake tremors were felt there.
The Russian Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Well-being (Rospotrebnadzor) is assisting Venezuela in ensuring sanitary-epidemiological well-being. The department's specialists are in Caracas and were not injured during the earthquake.
The United States announced the dispatch of search and rescue teams, medical supplies, and humanitarian aid. According to Washington, the delivery will be carried out by military air transport, for which the Pentagon will be responsible. The US also intends to provide Venezuela with satellite images of the affected areas for damage assessment and planning work.
President of El Salvador Nayib Bukele announced the preparation to send 300 rescuers and doctors, as well as 50 tons of equipment and medicines. The Dominican Republic will send specialized search and rescue units of the armed forces. France is preparing a group of 85 rescuers, and Spain - a plane with 54 specialists from the emergency military unit.
The United Nations World Food Program is also ready to provide assistance. The International Monetary Fund intends to discuss with the Venezuelan authorities the need for financial support for recovery after the earthquake.
