Chester FC are close to signing midfielder Dan Ward following his exit from National League North runners up South Shields.

The central midfielder who spent time at Newcastle United and Middlesbrough played 33 league games for the Mariners picking up 10 G/A.

Deal could be announced soon.

Chester Football Club can confirm that First Team Manager Calum McIntyre has left his position.

It was previously announced that Calum would depart at the end of the season. However, all parties believe it is now in the best interests of the football club to part company with immediate effect.

Appointed in May 2022, Calum took permanent charge of the Blues on more than 200 occasions, guiding the club to two play-off campaigns, including the National League North Promotion Final last year.

McIntyre, who was named Manager of the Season in 2022/23, also twice led the Blues to the Emirates FA Cup First Round Proper in his time in charge.

Tonight’s news brings an end to Calum’s 14-year association with the Club, having first joined as an Academy coach in 2012.

Everyone at Chester Football Club would like to place on record our sincere thanks to Calum for his exceptional contribution, and we wish him all the very best for the future.

The process of appointing a new First Team Manager is underway, and an update regarding interim arrangements will be provided in due course.

The performance was turgid, fans had every right to boo at half time and to groan for every misplaced pass. As I said, fans make this football club. The loan market allows us to get more value out of our money. GMJ came with the exact same pedigree as the likes of Tyrer, just this one didn’t work out

@Alfie724175 @ChesterFC We’ve had one permanent keeper which was Stanway. He left because bigger teams fish for them. Guarantee if we signed a NPL keeper, or whatever, he would go higher up. Rare you get a keeper that stays for years.

@Alfie724175 @ChesterFC I’m making numbers up here but if you had a £600/pw player in L2/NLN and signed them on a permanent, it would be a £600 hit for the club. Whereas the club can sign a £900/pw player on loan from higher up, for a split of his wage like £600 a week

@Alfie724175 @ChesterFC Loan goalkeepers is the best model for clubs at this level, and you can strike some gems. We were fortunate with Stanway. Look at goalkeepers pre Cal and post Cal, we’ve definitely had better keepers under Cal

@Alfie724175 @ChesterFC I disagree, mainly because goalkeepers are hard to find. Premier league hoard goalkeepers, they’ve got like 5/6 in their squad. Look at most Premier League teams, their number 2 is probably good enough to be a starter. The last keeper we had was Mason, and he dropped a few divs
