NEW: Austin zookeepers say management decisions there are making animals suffer.
Last summer, six of them wrote a 54-page letter to the board.
But the board backed its director--& stood by as keepers said they faced retaliation https://t.co/GgHYkD3KjW
@BrandonDunc@efindell Sad story. Advice of vet should be followed. Head of non-profit should not be head of board. Legislation shouldn't be needed, but maybe calling on the owner would help. I'll make the call.
@VikkiGoodwinTX@BrandonDunc@efindell Anything you could do to help hold leadership accountable would be amazing and greatly appreciated by those trying to improve the zoo.
Updates on the Austin Zoo from this week:
-One keeper suspended
-Three more keepers add accounts of animal suffering
-Zoo says it is doing an "outside investigation" (contradicting what it said previously) but refuses to say who is investigating what https://t.co/9GbbUWDnw1
Important note on this: Zoo board member Rick King explicitly told me before our story ran that the zoo had decided NOT to do an outside investigation of the keepers' claims.
Their statement yesterday references an "ongoing outside investigation" that they imply was ongoing then
What King told me Jan. 15: "We looked at the possibility of hiring some kind of outside company to do this and it is just astronomically expensive and the board decided it was unnecessary"
