Andres Cubillan, the production designer for #TheVampireLestat, shared stills and set pics of Lestat and Nicki's Paris apartment on Instagram:
"Int. Paris Apartment:
One apartment to tell three stages of a doomed love story.
Very quickly the question came up of "where and how are Nicky and Lestat living during the early part of their relationship" and how does that change after Lestat becomes a vampire. The backstory we gave them is that as penniless artists they are squatting in a former aristocrats apartment. "Merci! Madame Guillotine!" and then as Lestat becomes a vampire and more afluent, the space starts to transform.
I wanted to give them a beautiful space as a backdrop to their blossoming romance, despite their economic situation. The space is almost irrelevant at that point. All that matters is that there's a hay mattress on the floor, wood for the fire, and each other. The honeymoon phase.
As Lestat starts to gain status within the theater scene, the fights grow louder. More furniture in the room, less room for them and their love. We see dirty walls, the remnants of broken furniture and ripped drapery, Magnus's now drying bouquet of flowers.
Once Lestat become a vampire, the room goes through a more noticeable transformation. It's more austere, more serious, more cold. It's no longer the love nest... plus mama makes three.
I had a color palette in mind for this apartment from the start. I wanted these dusty pale colors to contrast with the contemporary world later. We didn't want the room to look too flowery or ornate. Not like the late 18th century fashions we're used to seeing, but more stripped back to the basic details of Parisian aristocratic architecture of Louis XV. But I'll confess that I changed some colors around once Set Decorator Summer Gaal found that bed.
Beautiful upholstery in pink silk with green and blue embroidery.
On a personal note, as I mentioned in a previous post, there are some incredible performances in this episode. @josephpotter_ broke our hearts in every take. I just wish we could have given him 10 more violins to smash and a few more hands to chop.
Special shout out to cinematographer @earledresner and Director @claudiallosa for their beautiful work in Episodes 303 & 304.
