I started to buy property in Miami and most of the owners didn't live here and laughed at my ideas. They had given up on the city. In my opinion Miami frequently gets overlooked.
They gladly sold me the property and called me many names-- crazy, "eccentric", clueless.
@sebastiangood@NoLongerBennett Yes. I'm all for transparency in pricing.
I don't even think energy utilities should be able to claim they have a "cheaper rate" by creating fixed fees.
Making the right decision as brainless as possible for the consumer is how we get an efficient economy.
@sebastiangood@NoLongerBennett In some cases, e.g. Miami resort taxes, the fees are imposed by local law and go directly to the government.
In other cases, the fees are an end run around properly listing inclusive nightly rates, but in those cases the fees themselves are taxable.
A common charge is "Your kid won't have social skills," but this is overwhelmingly leveled by people who do not themselves have good social skills.
90% of incels/weirdos just need one good sales boot camp and they would be above average at talking to people.

@train2000c@audiblemarco Yes.
Nagasaki was the centre of Christianity in Asia for centuries and had the biggest Catholic population.
So much so, that when it was nuked, a lot of people noted that Truman was a Master Mason...

People might look at Pan-Africanism and naively assume there should similarly be pan-Asianism. In 1910, this would have been correct. But Japan was the leader of the efforts to build a Pan-Asia Collective and when they attacked everyone else that ruined the whole idea.

China likes to talk big, but this one isn't on China.
Filipinos, Malaysians, and Koreans all have stories of their grandparents being abused by Japanese forces.
In 1910 Japan had the respect of all of Asia for standing up to European powers. You threw it away.

There would have been a pan-Asian collective, exactly as certain Japanese leaders had planned, and Japan would have peacefully cemented its leadership role for 100-200 years...
But this speed was too slow for Japanese Imperial officers who wanted glory in battle.

Some people will get upset about this but there is a certain glory in a society where people are at peace with where they are.
Your path is not for everyone else, and everyone's path is not for you.

This is really good #writing.
To really do a send-up of someone — to describe them in a way that seems devastating rather than simply petty — you must accurately understand them.
On good authority from connected tech friends- Zuckerberg read this story (not kidding). Hated it. Training to beat my ass in revenge.

Your rules don't matter. Cross Putin, cross Xi, within their spheres of influence and become the 17th person in 3 years who "mysteriously" fell out a hotel window.
This may be a gentleman's game in the West, but the rest of the world plays for keeps.

This is naive and pretends Turkey actually puts the rule of law first rather than personal relationships with powerful people first.
Musk's binary, while flawed, is a much more realistic approach to how strongmen deal with billionaires (cow them or crush them.)

Every day people in exalted positions get on this app and reveal they have NO CLUE how 3/4 of the world (outside the Anglosphere) operates.
