PhD candidate in Linguistics at The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Syntax and its interface with things (e.g., morphology, semantics and phonology).
Q: Does anyone have recommendations for good samples of research project descriptions/plans for postdoctoral fellowship applications (linguistics ones). Bonus points if they are roughly one-page examples (or 700-1000 word) and aimed at a committee with non-linguists
@saaaahiiiil Perhaps it needs reshaping, or is missing pieces (that feedback can help you identify). But, crucially, itโs often not crumbling. Keep at it, Sahil.
@saaaahiiiil I encourage you to go through with the โgoing aboutโ even after youโve told yourself itโs crumbling. Write it all out and then share it with others, receive feedback, & make edits. Then share edits with more folks, receive feedback, & make edits. Likely, you DO have a something.

@MattieWex Ahaha it does (kind of). Iโm supposed to present, but Iโm basically โon callโ for a trip back to Illinois. I will keep you posted though!! I hope I get to see you.
I just found out that 10 students are registered for my advisorโs field methods class in the spring, and Iโm so excited. She also told me that multiple students who registered highlighted that I strongly encouraged them to do so ๐ค
I get so much joy/excitement from watching my undergraduate research advisees present at a conference for the first time! My student, Rishab Borah, gave a great talk on the NP/DP parameter as it relates to Assamese at this yearโs WECOL. ๐คฉ
The University of Illinois hosted theย 29th Mid-Continental Phonetics and Phonology Conference (MidPhonย 29), bringing together phonetics and phonology researchers from the Midwestern region of the United States!

The Halle Award and Fromkin Prize Committee unanimously decided to recognize @AnderBeristain as the new recipient of the Morris Halle Memorial Award for Faculty Excellence in Phonology Award in 2025. Anderโs work addresses second and heritage language phonology and has found that bilingual speakers possess two physiological segment-timing systems.
Attend the 2025 LSA Annual Meeting to meet Ander and celebrate his achievement. #LSAAWARDS #Linguistics https://t.co/dKhjkuw9xw
Probably important to note that this abstract was NOT accepted for presentation and the reviewer I mention did not give it a high score (no bias here ๐).
I recently reread some conference-abstract reviews I received. And there is a certain reviewer or subset of reviewers who I think Iโve had on multiple occasions who give the most HELPFUL feedback.
I, by no means, expect volunteer reviewers to be quite as thorough/helpful as this person/people. I do, however, appreciate it a lot. It always gets me excited to work more on the project.
