New UK suicide guidelines - Tons of lessons for US psychiatrists:
• Risk prediction is "unreliable", "simplistic", and "flawed" - low/high risk offers false certainty
• Scales are "unvalidated" and have "no predictive value" - they don't work
• Understand "each person's situation" - treat the individual, not a scale
• "Engage, listen, validate with compassion and acceptance" - make patients feel seen
• Many lack intent until "minutes beforehand" - constant questioning doesn't make sense, instead plan for future
• "Use their words" - avoid "impersonal" jargon
• "Realistic" appears 5 times, against the US’s sometimes unrealistic "zero suicides" fixation.
Adopting this nuanced, human-first framework can help bridge the gap between rigid protocols and the messy reality of mental health. (link below)
Cutie at the library saw me working on a hematology presentation and was wondering if I’m trying to get into medschool because he’s happy to give me advice. “Believe in yourself”. I’m putting that quote as the last slide of the lecture I was asked to give his class next week lmao
When things that bring you joy end up making you feel worse. 🧵👇
It's all about the Pain-Pleasure Balance - a concept from the book Dopamine Nation by Dr. Anna Lembke.
It’s completely reshaped how I think about pleasure, discomfort, and my habits.
I’m still trying to apply it in my life, but here’s what I’ve learned so far:
"What if the DSM diagnosed the cultural pathologies of capitalism & colonialism rather than the individuals afflicted by them? A forthcoming article in American Psychologist does just that -satirically turning psychiatry’s diagnostic bible against itself."

A push to protect the ‘nurse’ job title in law has cleared its first hurdle in Parliament.
MP @DawnButlerBrent made the case for new legislation this afternoon to make it an offence for someone to call themselves a nurse unless registered with the NMC.

Intense exercise is an antidepressant. Addressing nutrient deficiencies is an antidepressant. Leaving abusive & unloving relationships is an antidepressant. Meaningful work is an antidepressant. Love is an antidepressant. Safe living conditions are an antidepressant. You get it
This study finds that psychiatrists who worked on DSM-5 received $14M in undisclosed funding from the pharmaceutical industry; the very industry that has profited enormously from DSM's over-medicalisation of everyday life.

"Those who suffered the Holocaust do not want to be involved in anyone else's genocide". A Jewish Holocaust survivor making the Jewish people proud again in the face of Israel's genocide of Palestinians.
This is the best illustration of the obscene wealth of Elon Musk that I’ve seen.
Look how much rice he’s got!
We don’t have to organise our world like this.
Our mental health sector has become 'the new opium of the people' by working to pathologise the social suffering that would otherwise galvanise people to political action - spreading an ideological sedative powerful enough to disable the human impulse for social reform. #Sedated
