This student loan furore is really frustrtaing me.
People have been extremely vocal about the unfairness, but nobody is offering any reasonable solution that actually benefits the graduates.
This is what I would do for Plan 2:
@Stocksandsaving Dont think many people believe this, but those with an agenda mislead people by wording it to imply this.
The marginal increases too high and should be changed.
There should be more bands with smaller increments. This would then reduce behavioural changes to minimise tax.
@GreetingsPaulYT My company's net pay bill for July was circa ยฃ210k for all staff.
On top of that, we paid ยฃ138k to HMRC.
40% of the total wage went straight to taxman.
@dontdelay If we are meant to be responsible for contributing to our own pensions, then it should be up to us to decide where we want to invest our pension money.
@tomhfh Am I being thick, but doesnt that mean everything with two or more ingredients mixed together count as processed?
And apparently anything that isnt taken direct from the source to the shelf too?
@ShaisTaub Go to a Sephardi shul where the chazan reads everything out loud.
Where i grew up, Shacharit started at 6.15 / 6.30 and finished 7.40 - 7.50.
Would take about half an hour to get to Yishtabach.
10-15 mins (depending on reader) to get to Hodu. Can hear every word.
@jamesinsurrey Yes they agreed to the terms, but Plan 2 loans are designed so that only the top 10% (or so) of earners can pay this off.
If the graduate was from a poor background, then theyd need to be in the top 5% or even higher.
Its designed to be 30 year tax for the majority of grads.
@Bowley123Adamb1@_BlueRabbit_@timricketts_ Probably another doctor who will move to Australia and never repays their student loan (cant blame them).
They've been fucked over.
@_BlueRabbit_@timricketts_ If he is a Dr .... no.
If he was on a 3 year degree with the full maintenance loan .... no
If a 3 year degree with part of the maintenance loan ... yes but only a small amount of capital.
@TD_EW91@BBCNewsnight You can blame Nick Hillman for that.
Not necessarily Cleggs's fault.
The reason you cant repay your loan is those behind Plan 2 thought the 3% interest surcharge would be fairer to stop richer people from repaying too quickly.
As a consequence, it has now trapped middle earners
@DoubleEph@smallStateUK According to Tax Policy Associates, 0.48% is not even half the rate to be fiscally neutral.
https://t.co/SCgLOmXjzr
1.28% to replace Stamp Duty and Council Tax
0.26% to replace just Stamp Duty
@JamesP728 This would be one way of depressing house prices in London and South East and raising house prices elsewhere.
Younger homeowners in London and South East (of which I am one of them) will be screwed over by this.
Overpaid and now expensive LVT on those overpriced properties.
@JimboJones1237@mrdev821@ChrisGoodsell83@GreatBritishTT@PolitlcsUK Admittedly, my ยฃ7.6k was based on the model by Tax Policy Associates, which replaced both Stamp Duty and Council Tax with revenue neutral 1.28% LVT. At 0.48%, its still double (ish) what I currently pay. Irony is, my house will be valued less because of it.
@LowbankBaron@JamesP728 https://t.co/SCgLOmXjzr
Accordiny to Tax Policy Associates, to replace Stamp Duty and Council Tax and be fiscally neutral, LVT would need to be 1.28%.
To replace Stamp Duty only, LVT needs to be 0.26%.
So, your hunch is probably right.
@tc1415 Can you provide the exception under the Sunday Trading Act 1994 that states Jewish owned stores above 280 square meters are allowed to stay open longer than 6 hours?
