Tropical Storm Bavi has been named to the west of the Marshall Islands, and the early model runs for her potential future intensity are some of the most extreme you will ever see.

The ECMWF, which is historically one of the less aggressive models, showed Bavi hitting ~871 mbar earlier today. Now, the latest run is barely budging from this ultraviolent estimate, still dropping Bavi down to ~882 mbar between the Philippines, Taiwan, and Japan. This in no way means we’re super likely to actually see that happen, as it would take an absolutely perfect sequence of meteorological events to occur, but it at least shows how explosive the conditions in the Philippine Sea are.

In the early 1990s, Dr. John O’Sullivan and a team at Australia’s national science agency CSIRO were trying to build a system to detect the radio wave signatures of black hole explosions. The problem was that radio signals scatter and reflect, making them nearly impossible to detect cleanly. To solve it, the team developed a mathematical method to interpret scattered signals more accurately. 

The black hole project failed. The math did not.

O’Sullivan and the team soon realized that the very system intended to search for black holes could also unscramble signals in a wireless network. Their original work spun off into the invention of a process for transmitting data over airwaves, leading to the creation of Wi-Fi. 

This repurposed and unintentional invention earned the CSIRO roughly $1 billion in royalties. O’Sullivan patented it in Australia first in 1992, then later in the US in 1996. 

The part most people miss is what happened after. For years companies used Wi-Fi without paying for the patent and CSIRO had to fight lengthy court battles to earn recognition and eventually over a billion dollars in settlements. 

So yes. Wi-Fi was essentially created by accident. A team of Australians went looking for black holes, found nothing, and accidentally built the technology that now carries more than half of all internet traffic worldwide.

Science does not always find what it is looking for. Sometimes it finds something better.
