Separatists are *shocked* by my suggestion that Canada could revoke Canadian citizenship from Albertans following a unilateral declaration of independence (UDI.)
They believe that Alberta would get to determine how Canada would respond to a UDI, and that Albertans would have a right to hold and transmit Canadian citizenship to the nth generation.
But at the same time, they would not grant Alberta citizenship to the ~50% or Albertans born outside the province, i.e. people who are Albertans by choice, not chance.
So half the Alberta population (myself included) would be ineligible for Alberta citizenship, but the separatists would get to keep their Canadian passport to travel and work in the rest of Canada visa-free.
How crazy is that?
Utilised my newly acquired citizenship to partake in a very worthy petition, I hope you get all the signatures you need @CorbLund, those magnificent Rockies need to be preserved and the water needs to remain safe for all walks of life!!!
If there were an award for being in the news for all the wrong reasons, #Alberta and @ABDanielleSmith would be sweeping the ceremony. Truly impressive.
Hi everybody. I’m just the average Albertan ready to crush some separatist plans by using something they aren’t into… facts. 🇨🇦
• They wildly overstate Alberta’s net contribution to Ottawa. Throwing around $44-47B, but the real net fiscal outflow is closer to $14B per federal data and Fraser Institute/StatsCan numbers.
• Real separation means capital flight, higher borrowing costs with a new country risk premium, and losing federal risk-sharing in downturns. Fantasy surpluses turn into deficits or brutal cuts fast.
• New military and other federal services from scratch? Their “Value of Freedom” plan lowballs defense at just $3-5B a year for an “Alberta Military” (with $1-2B initial capital). No mention of NATO or any 2% target. Then add borders, currency, embassies, policing, international relations, and everything else Ottawa handles now.
• On Indigenous services, they actually plan to spend more: bumping it up to $4.2-5B annually, including $2.4-3.2B extra to support “sovereign self-governing communities.”
• “No taxes”… Laughable. You’d still need to fund all that. Taxes don’t vanish. They get renamed and probably raised.
• Trade and integration shocks alone would wipe out about $20B GDP yearly (4% of the economy).
Alberta pulls its weight in Canada. This walkaway fantasy isn’t a flex. It’s expensive delusion. Fix Confederation, don’t torch it.
RT to help smash their delusions.
