The record of Nicolás Maduro is, by any objective measure, deeply troubling. Human rights organisations have meticulously documented thousands of alleged extrajudicial killings carried out by Venezuelan security forces under his watch. The legitimacy of elections where he has claimed victories exceeding 90 per cent has been rightly questioned by observers across the globe. We must be clear-eyed about the gravity of these reports.

Yet, acknowledging these failures does not settle a far more dangerous question for our global community. For the US to launch a bombing campaign on Caracas, forcibly remove the president and his wife, and transfer them to New York, means we are witnessing a seismic and perilous shift in the international order. Regardless of our view of Maduro, such unilateral regime change would constitute a grave breach of the very norms that keep our world stable.

If we allow powerful nations to decide on a whim when sovereignty no longer applies, it becomes increasingly difficult to argue coherently that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is fundamentally unacceptable. We cannot have it both ways. If international law is enforced selectively—binding on some while remaining optional for others—it ceases to be law at all. It becomes merely a tool of convenience.

congrats @icelandcricket on turning 25 last week. On 22nd July 2000, Iceland Cricket formally came to be; on the same day our marriage started. We obviously had to celebrate with matching his and hers Iceland Cricket shirts!
