Samsung and MTN have started rolling out a system that remotely blocks core features on the device, including apps, mobile data connectivity, phone calls, and the camera on Galaxy devices bought on contract if a customer defaults on their payments and continues to ignore the payment request.

Only emergency calls remain available, as well as access to the payment app for settling device fees. Samsung was also in talks with Vodacom to trial the system with its customers, while phone rental services like PEP’s FoneYam, PayJoy, and MyFlex were also using it.
