New Yorkers are so funny to me man. They really lean into this idea that there’s some sacred unspoken pact of unity binding every person in the city together like it’s a tight knit village instead of an absolute dystopian cesspool where you’re gambling on not getting assaulted everytime you take the subway.
this essay was a very good leading indicator of the zeitgeist, which I would characterise as "frontier labs may not win the whole pie": the Satya nadella essay, GLM release, fable rugpull, cursor acquisition, vertical products pivoting to post-training (Harvey).
I think these arguments are worth engaging with, and a valid counterpoint to the prevailing narrative of frontier lab dominance, but unfortunately for knowledge workers and AI builders, I happen to think that the prevailing narrative is correct, and frontier labs are going to continue their march to RSI and subsequently some flavour of superintelligence.
and things are going to get weird, and difficult to reason about. all the claims about private real world data/processes, places the "models can't reach", are not truly engaging with what massive increases in intelligence could achieve.. partially because it's so hard for us to reason about systems with much more intelligence (Vinge's principle), and even mores, how those systems behave in a broader multi-agent system. i.e. not every law firm is going to need to upskill, most of them may just get outcompeted by an AI-native or superintelligence-backed version.
Our internal data shows Claude is accelerating AI development—a possible path to recursive self-improvement, or AI autonomously building a more capable successor.
It’s happening faster than we thought, and the implications deserve greater attention. https://t.co/OVVPJO7VQx
The Silicon Valley I came to in 2016 -- once a low-status refuge for weirdos, naive tinkerers, and missionaries -- has been overrun by input-maxxing Kumon striver types.
Company-building for this class of “entrepreneurs” is an exercise in performative escalations between startups touting their inputs: who can burn the most tokens, who can work the most hours, who can get the most views on an over-produced launch video.
This is why even “ARR,” which should be (and once was) an output of an excellent product and sales engine, has become a noisy, somewhat fake input -- into a machine designed to capture the zeitgeist for 15 minutes, dupe VCs, and maximize fundamentals-agnostic capital flows into a business. Actual company-building is a sideshow for the “cracked” YC-backed founder-striver.
When you talk to many of these people, they have no idea why they’re building what they’re building in the same way that a 16 year old doesn’t really know why he joined 12 clubs or took 15 AP classes -- only that they desperately want to maximize their visible, measurable inputs, tell you about it, and collect their gold star.
It’s easy to place the blame on YC, and they surely deserve plenty of it, but YC’s turn towards performative, low-stakes, incrementalist entrepreneurship is really just another symptom of the broader problems plaguing Silicon Valley: the inevitability of industry maturation and the playbook-ization of startups, demographic change, financial nihilism downstream of bad policy and psychopathic rhetoric coming from some leaders, etc.
The real progress being made amidst all of this is astounding, but the increasingly absurd shenanigans won’t stop until the culture punishes bad behavior and we prosecute, literally, some of the criminals running these companies.
Hitting your kids is in the same category as circumcision, iPads, strict adherence to the CDC vaccine schedule---it is for Ns, goyim, and walmart pajama people. It lowers IQ (Straus, 1995), increases aggression (Gershoff, 2016), is less effective than a timeout, and requires escalation to keep working. The replies to articles like this are filled up with the Dumbest People Who Ever Existed saying "it worked for me" and then genuinely malicious and hateful morons dropping reaction gifs of like daffy duck swinging a belt
"EVERY STATE IN AMERICA ALLOWS YOU TO PHYSICALLY CORRECT YOUR CHILD. It's legal. It's fun. Bring it on." -- profile says: Cat Sanctuary Dad. Unyielding steel. Workouts, keto, cat chaos, anime rants. Godzilla, Gundam, Mazinger, Ultraman, classical art, manga.
If you hit your kids, you will create permanent emotional distance with the only person/people you could ever be that close to, not to mention sending them down the road of being as much of a lost fuckup loser as you are who will hit their own kids, or wont, but only after spending a decade figuring out why they reflexively apologize all the time.
I love the Presidio of San Francisco.
Among other things, it’s covered in a beautiful forest of eucalyptus trees.
Like the Marin Headlands across the Golden Gate, it used to be a barren coastal grassland. Nothing would grow there due to the winds.
The US Army put big guns in the Presidio to guard the Golden Gate. They needed a way to hide the batteries from reconnaissance, so they planted fast growing eucalyptus. And the trees took root and thrived.
The trees changed the environment. And today, instead of a windswept grassland, the Presidio is a forrest.
The forest blocked the ocean winds and created its own microclimate. Under the canopy other plants and birds and animals also took root—and they thrived too.
How many things and ideas and people wandered across oceans and journeyed across this country until they finally took root at the edge of the continent?
That’s what happened with my father and grand parents. And it happened to me. I was born there, but was taken away as a child. It didn’t take root—I didn’t take off—until I returned.
California is the most American part of America. It’s a place where you can build anything and be anything. It was a place to raise a family, or start a business, or invent new art and music and culture and technology.
Anything and everything was possible in California. At least that’s the way it used to be.
At some point the dream died. It’s hard to say when exactly, because it was different for all of us.
For me the dream died when I caught a man breaking into my San Francisco home. Our dog scared him away. He fled. I called the police but they wouldn’t respond. They wouldn’t even come to take a report. We lived 2 blocks from the police station and they wouldn’t come.
On the phone they asked “Is he black guy?”
I said, yes he was.
They said “Don’t worry, we’ll get him.”
And then they hung up the phone. They didn’t even take down my name.
That’s when I knew it was time to leave.
So we moved out of state, found a friendly little town in the Mountain West, and started planting new roots.
Our new home was nice for a time—our first years here was great. Cheap houses, good schools, safe streets, low taxes. It was the opposite of California.
That ended in 2020 with Covid hysteria, inflation, illegal migration, “progressive” policing, and (above all) toxic leftist politics.
The rot is here. And it’s coming everywhere. And if you think you’re safe—if you think you’re immune—trust me: you’re not.
It’s imminent, and you wont be safe forever.
For me, there's no place left to run.
So I’m standing my ground.
I’m fighting back.
And I’m convinced that California is the place to start.
Because it’s still fertile ground for new things and new trends—like common sense pragmatic politics.
We’re going to win by throwing a better party. Everyone is invited, and we’ll accept anyone who wants to join.
So welcome to the party. It’s gunna be a blast.
This is New Americanism. This is the Reconquista of our nation. And it's taking root at the edge of the continent.
You won’t want to miss this.
So don’t be late to the party.
Not just nonprofits. Every large corporation contains multiple departments that exist, functionally, as adult daycare centers for young single women to pretend they’re working. Much of this phenomenon is downstream from the Civil Rights Act & the HR+DEI superstructure it spawned.
Much of the sexual market dysfunction+fertility crisis (specifically, mediocre women convinced of their superiority to men of equal caliber) is downstream of those same women pulling cartoonishly inflated salaries from cartoonishly inflated fake email jobs, a racket underwritten+enforced in part by the Civil Rights Abomination+its insidious tentacles threaded throughout the DEI+HR superplex.
Example:
something i'm noticing lately: gen Z is lowkey the first time they actually have had face face to see someone where now literally nobody's anymore like we used somehow to be
The Israel Defense Force has confirmed the authenticity of a photo showing an Israeli Soldier smashing a statue of Jesus Christ in Southern Lebanon, adding that “appropriate measures will be taken against those involved” under the IDF Northern Command.
