A few years ago just 60 Desertas island land snails survived… but we’ve JUST reintroduced 1,300 to the wild 🌍
For 100+ years, they were thought to be extinct… then came a remarkable discovery! Just 60 were found on a tiny island in the Atlantic Ocean 🌊
They were flown to Chester where our experts worked to breed them for the first time ever in human care... and now the population has grown into the thousands! 📈
With the snails thriving, more than 1,300 have just been successfully reintroduced to Bugio Island - a protected wildlife haven in Maderia, Portugal.
This has to be the comeback of the century! 🐌
⚠️ SATURDAY 7 DECEMBER – IMPORTANT UPDATE ⚠️
We’re so sorry to announce that due to a severe weather warning, including very high winds forecast throughout the day tomorrow, the zoo will be closed on Saturday 7 December. This includes both daytime admissions and Lanterns & Light in the evening.
If you have tickets to visit the zoo during the day on Saturday or Lanterns & Light in the evening, please check your emails for a message from us - it contains everything you need to know.
We really do apologise for the disruption to your plans - but ensuring the safety of our visitors, staff, and animals is our absolute priority. Our dedicated animal care teams will, of course, continue to keep a close eye on all the animals during these challenging weather conditions.
We've been closely following the forecast and the good news is that today, Friday 6 December, the zoo is open as normal and Lanterns & Light will go ahead safely this evening. We're optimistic that the zoo and Lanterns & Light will also be open as normal on Sunday 8 December. Should anything change, we’ll keep you updated.
Thank you for your understanding, and please stay safe and warm! 💚

✨ SUPER RARE ✨ The last remaining mountain bongos in Kenya caught on camera! 🇰🇪
🎥 Watch the heartwarming moment our conservationists spot one of these super rare antelopes in Kenya, Africa - a place where we’re working to protect the last 50 that remain.
To help boost the tiny population, we’re making plans with other European zoos and partners in Kenya to move 10 bongos, born in zoos like ours, to Africa. That’s why the recent birth of female calf Navari, right here in Chester, is vital to the survival of the species.
We’re also now working with Conservation AI to revolutionise how bongo species are monitored in the wild, using the latest AI tech to help protect the remaining population.
Together, we want to ensure the mountain bongo has a future in Africa 💫
Amazing conservation news from Rwanda!
Five years after we spearheaded efforts to relocate a group of rhinos which had been born and raised in zoos across Europe to a new home in Akagera National Park in Rwanda, we’re thrilled to share some INCREDIBLE news...
Olmoti, one of the rhinos we helped to reintroduce, has given birth to this wonderful, healthy calf! Here he is, spotted on hidden cameras.
We coordinate the Europe-wide breeding programme for eastern black rhinos, so this is a really proud moment for us. But, most importantly, it's a BIG moment for this critically endangered species.
It's also an achievement that’s a true testament to the power of teamwork, with the Government of Rwanda, African Parks, the Rwanda Development Board, and the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA) joining forces with us to make this remarkable conservation success possible.
Our work in supporting translocations, through conservation breeding programmes and our scientific expertise, whether here in Rwanda or in places like Kenya, is vital to the survival of the species. From those dedicated teams and our partners on the ground who monitor and track these rhinos daily, right through to innovative technology and research techniques being developed at the zoo which have boosted birth rates globally, it’s all leading to the continued recovery of black rhino numbers... and that really is something to celebrate.
Together, we are creating a future where species like rhinos can thrive 🫶
