Let’s get to work! 💪🏽
December marks Movimiento Poder’s third anniversary! We've had an incredible journey—one that would not have been possible without the support of people like you.

"The message that you have been sending us repeatedly says we do not matter. To our youngest learners in the district, you have said we do not count. You are telling their families they do not matter."
🧵 testimonies from todays public comment on school closures 👇🏽
“I urge you to vote against Dr. Marrero’s recommendation for school closure. It's based on statistics, mathematics, projections. It's not based on the people and the human beings that go to these schools.“
POWER TO THE YOUTH ✊🏽
Today, hundreds of students, teachers, staff, parents, and community members from DCIS Baker, West MS, DSISD, and Manual HS came together to raise their voices against Denver Public Schools’ proposal to close 10 schools across the city.
Our work is possible thanks to people like you. Colorado Gives Day is December 10, but you can donate early starting today! Help us create a safe space for our community to build power.

School closures will cause irreversible harm to our Denver students, parents, and community members, particularly for Black, Brown and low-income families.

DPS is planning on closing our neighborhood public schools. We will not stand for that. Schools are at the heart of our community.
We need your help more than ever to keep our neighborhood schools alive. Click here to send your board members an email: https://t.co/6ZTCDT8lJN
Superintendent Dr. Alex Marrero has just presented to the DPS Board of Education a recommended list of schools to be consolidated at the end of the 2024-2025 school year due to declining enrollment. To view the list and details about this process visit- https://t.co/CgnWiI1dXg
“School closures should always be the last resort, and even then, there should be some form of decision-making power that lies in the hands of students and families which stand to be most affected by closures.”
- Elsa Bañuelos, Executive Director of Movimiento Poder
We've been to most of DPS' regional engagement meetings on school closures.
Let us be clear: there is no community engagement at these meetings.
DPS must halt this rushed process immediately and listen to what DPS student and families truly need.

“The truth will come out, and it will expose how these closures are not just about budgets and performance metrics-they are about power and neglect.”
-MiDian Shofner, CEO for the Epitome of Black Excellence and Partnership
“School closures disproportionately harm Black, Brown, and low-income communities, destabilizing neighborhoods and uprooting students. Our children deserve leadership that fights for their schools, not abandons them.”
-Auon’tai, Former Vice President of the Denver School Board.
