so does the right of local voters to vote out local politicians who wasted or misspent those dollars. The Governor's property tax proposal addresses the wrong problem the wrong way. Let local voters decide how much to be taxed and how those taxes are to be spent at the local level. Giving more power to the State and less power to voters is never the right answer in a democracy.
@Cointuckeywind1 Once again, you've proven that your keen insight and unparalleled intellect match perfectly to your nom de plume. Well done :) and thanks for the like.
@GPlisken@davocorbulo@ZFW0114380@TampaDan Maybe that's the problem that needs to be solved. How do we create more access for regular people to become politically active AND effective? How do we put the power of local government back where it belongs... with the people?
@davocorbulo@ZFW0114380@TampaDan The difference is that you can vote the local officials out of office. You can go to commission meetings. You can hold them accountable. Once you give all that power to the State - ONE, you no longer have any control. - TWO, you’ll never get it back.
Imagine a world where the Federal Government stepped in and said, "we're now going to take over how States levy and receive taxes and what they can and can't spend that money on. That's essentially what the Governor's plan does to municipalities. It eliminates self-governance and self-determination.
Oh... lowering property taxes is a fantastic thing to pursue, just not at the expense of giving the State control over how local communities are run. We don't need more government control. We need less. I don't want the State dictating that my town doesn't need additional cops, or that homeless outreach workers don't need to be funded, or that the roads don't need to be fixed. All those decisions should be made by people who actually live in my community (and who local voters can hold accountable or vote out of office).
Governor DeSantis has finally unveiled his plan to eliminate property taxes. Sounds great, right? Here’s a breakdown through my branding and marketing lens.
If someone told me that there's a Governor who's trying to move control over local taxing and local budgeting to the State, usurping local municipalities ability to govern and taking away voters rights to self-determination, I would bet you money we were talking about Gavin Newsom. What's even more shocking is how many so-called-Republicans are all for this scheme. What would it take to get Republicans to become raving liberals?? Evidently a few thousand dollars a year in property tax relief.
You're correct -- this new proposal now places control of your municipal spending in the hands of a whole new group of corrupt politicians. The only difference is that you don't get to vote these new folks out of office. The answer to your problem is not less voter involvement. The answer is MORE voter involvement. That's why the Governor's plan is dangerous.
@ChrisMartzWX It’s not the dollars. It’s who controls them. The Governor’s plan consolidates that control with the State. That means local voters have less control and can exert less accountability over how their communities are run. I’m shocked Gavin Newsom hasn’t endorsed this plan yet.
Hey Florida, don’t you finds it ironic that the same Governor who told you that parents have the right to decide what their kids learn in school is now telling those same parents that if they want lower property taxes they’ll need to forfeit their right to decide how those taxes will be spent?
Florida needs property tax reform, just not the Soviet style version of centralized government they just put on the November ballot. Best to reject it and come back with something that preserves representative government. Gift link: https://t.co/bJ4M5NBz6Y https://t.co/AuVe7tfegc
@mwathey@ChristinaPushaw Not so. Whatever party is in control will control how your community spends tax dollars. The State, no matter who’s in charge, will control the purse strings.
