The US doesn’t pay NATO anywhere close to “trillions of dollars” or “hundreds of billions of dollars a year.” Trump hasn’t built anywhere close to “over 1,000 miles of wall.” Trump hasn’t “ended eight wars.” It’s not true that “nobody” else has ended a war. Trump didn’t achieve “no tax on Social Security.” Ruth Bader Ginsburg died weeks before a presidential election, not right after one. Senator Thom Tillis is still a senator.

Charlotte Fire Captain Lee Bright spent more than two decades preparing for the emergencies firefighters expect. What he did not expect was a rare cancer discovered during a routine department physical.

Bright was diagnosed with thymic carcinoma, an exceptionally uncommon cancer with roughly 400 surgeries performed nationwide each year. The diagnosis pulled him into a fight that unfolded far from the fireground and brought sharp focus to what mattered most.

During treatment, Bright faced the same questions many firefighters confront when illness interrupts a career built on service. Would he return to the job he loves. Would he be there for his family. One fear stayed with him throughout the process. He did not want his son to have to bury his father.

Today, Bright is back at work and continues regular PET scans as part of long term monitoring. His story underscores that occupational cancer remains the leading cause of line of duty deaths in the fire service and that early detection through annual physicals can save lives.

January is Fire Fighter Cancer Awareness Month, led nationally by the @IAFFofficial in partnership with the Firefighter Cancer Support Network, to raise awareness, promote prevention, and support firefighters facing a cancer diagnosis.
