@SausageOfFate Given today’s English dub standards are a bit more loose (in most cases), if Dragon Ball was localised, I’m sure most of the stuff would’ve been left untranslated. They’ve only kept the dub names of older characters due to established continuity (Mr. Satan is an exception).

@croooozin Well obviously I mentioned the show in Cantonese so I’d use the Cantonese names always, though at the time I didn’t know what his original name was back then until I was like 7, but it’s based either on nostalgia or how one experienced the show. So to each their own.

@croooozin Twitter word limits are limiting, but to add on, I don’t agree on that post. But I’m just trying to find ways to understand it. For example, despite where I am, I grew up on Cantonese-dubbed Jp media so I tend to use the Cantonese names (we called Doraemon “Ding-dong” back then).

@ultraafroman402 It’s either some sort of licensing restrictions (something the Japanese side of the production really needs to fix) or just some tradition they decided to carry out from 4Kids. Only Pokémon and that other show I’m too lazy to remember the title of have this practice still.
