HR: We lost our top employee today.
CEO: What happened?
HR: He resigned.
CEO: That makes no sense. He was our top performer.
HR: Yes. And that was part of the problem.
CEO: What do you mean?
HR: He found out he was earning 15% less than one coworker, 11% less than another, and 8% less than a third.
CEO: How did he find that out?
HR: He discussed salary with his coworkers during lunch.
CEO: That violates the employee handbook.
HR: That is what you told him.
CEO: Because employees are not supposed to discuss compensation.
HR: He was not the problem. The pay gap was.
CEO: There are many factors that determine pay.
HR: He had the same job title, the same length of service, and more tenure than two of them.
CEO: That does not automatically mean equal pay.
HR: He also handled the highest number of clients and generated the third-highest revenue.
CEO: Salary reviews are done in March.
HR: He was not asking for a promotion cycle. He was asking why the lowest-paid person on the team was also one of the strongest performers.
CEO: I told him we could discuss it later.
HR: You also warned him that discussing pay could lead to a formal warning.
CEO: I was reminding him of company policy.
HR: He heard it as punishment for discovering he was underpaid.
CEO: That was not my intention.
HR: Intentions do not matter much when the message is, “You found unfairness, so now you are in trouble.”
CEO: Then he resigned immediately?
HR: Yes. He used his saved vacation days to shorten his notice period.
CEO: I tried calling him after that.
HR: I know. You wanted to restructure his responsibilities and revisit his compensation.
CEO: Because losing him creates a serious gap.
HR: He already knew that. That is why the underpayment hurt even more.
CEO: Did he respond? ↓
My stepmother raised me as her own from the time I was six.
I called her “Mom” for fourteen years, hugged her at every graduation, and defended her against anyone who said she wasn’t blood.
But at twenty, I found a letter my dad wrote the night before he died. The first line made me drop the photo I was holding and tremble.
For a moment, I stopped calling her Mom….
