❗️The Russian army has taken control of more Ukrainian territory since early April than Kiev managed to conquer during its large-scale counteroffensive last year, The Washington Post sadly reports. - FRWL
This matter is all about mathematics: mathematics instruction, mathematics imagination, and mathematical experimentation/entrepreneurship. Sadly but implacably, US is falling behind. @nfergus
The Fed and the Treasury are also treating the blockchain-based financial innovations that offer the best alternative to China’s e-yuan like gatecrashers at their own exclusive party. My latest for @bopinion https://t.co/ejADy2vIzl

Nice point in school math from @DanielPearcy. Here is another: the line equation can also be written as
x + y/(-4)=1
which is the form given by the two intersections with the axes.
This generalizes to multiple dimensions, unlike the slope-intersect.

Last year I thought about why we tend to place exclusive emphasis on y-intercept form of a straight line, given that with higher degree polynomials we place high emphasis on factored form (or x-intercept form). I now like to address both forms - does anyone else do this?

When I came to this country I went to @NYUStern to get MBA. A few times I made the mistake to say what I was thinking - until one of their oh-so-brilliant asked me: "If you are so smart, why did you come here?"
Next morning I was out of there. Never regretted!

As a teenager, I had dreams of becoming either a math professor or a science writer. But when I asked for a summer job with @NYTScience, I was told "even our copyboys have journalism degrees." #a_road_not_taken
@MPitici I was thinking more in the lines of the reviews and popular math books you have collected in one page. Thought you have some bookmarks of the stuff you find across journals, publications & blogs. Had a very good time with your Popular Math collection. Thats the reason I asked.
I am not sure I understand your question. Are you asking whether you can suggest pieces? Yes, of course. Although the overwhelming material in the volumes I find myself in publications, occasionally articles sent to me by others make it into the collection. I look at everything.
Yes @SuraSys1. Every volume includes a long list (up to 20 pages) of "also runs" - pieces I considered but did not include for various reasons (length, copyright issues, etc.) The series is a research tool for readers who want to find more readings on math, their own.
@MPitici Do you keep any list of "nominees" for your yearly Best Writings in Mathematics series? Articles in the long list (say) but could not make it ?
No remarkable new math during Roman times:

Yes, but major theoretical integration with encyclopedic knowledge (in Isidor of Seville's 'Etymologies') -- foundation for the applied math to follow centuries later:

Shopping at the local grocery store and learning from each other (online) how to cook, commoners can eat better and healthier than most kings, emperors, czars, and pharaohs who ever lived.
We are the luckiest generation that has ever lived. On average, we are longer living, richer, healthier, more educated, safer and, even, happier, than any other people who have ever lived. https://t.co/29Gk6ABfDk
Last semester one student wrote on exam "F ln (x) =" and proceeded to apply the divergence theorem. That's how he read my handwritten word "Flux", despite my repeated verbal explanations! Range of student misunderstandings is unlimited, refreshing. But how could he memorize that?
In hs after reading Hamlet the teacher asked for our favorite passage from the play. Being a wise-a** kid I wrote "Too Bee Oar Knot Two Bee." No credit but teacher wrote "haha" on the test. Every have a student write snarky comment on a text that you gave them a "haha" rating?
