1981 - The portion of I-43 extending from Port Washington Road to the Marquette interchange is completed, effectively destroying the black neighborhood and business district of Bronzeville.
1977 - The private, non-profit Metropolitan #Milwaukee Fair Housing Council is founded, using a variety of educational and enforcement tactics to combat discrimination and promote fair housing and racially integrated communities. #BlackHistoryMonth#Blackhistorymonth2022#mke
1976 - After eleven years, Lloyd Barbee’s federal lawsuit “Amos et al v. Board of School Directors of the City of #Milwaukee,” is successful, although there are still several years of appeals and associated trials. #BlackHistoryMonth#Blackhistorymonth2022#mke#history
April 1968 - The Federal Open Housing law is passed on April 11th, preventing discrimination in 80% of the nation. On April 30th the #Milwaukee Common Council passes an even more stringent desegregation law. #BlackHistoryMonth#Blackhistorymonth2022#mke#history
September 11, 1967 - Two hundred opponents of open housing attend a White Power rally in Humboldt Park. That evening more than a thousand demonstrators clashed with 650 open house proponents. #history#localhistory#blackhistorymonth#Blackhistorymonth2022
August 30, 1967 - Mayor Maier prohibits marches between 4:00 PM-9:00 AM for the next thirty days. The Youth Council cancels their march and rallies at Freedom House instead. The police declare it unlawful and arrest fifty-eight people. #BlackHistoryMonth#Blackhistorymonth2022
