I actually ran the numbers on 1 ha recently. My budget came to $6,482/ha, using deliberately worst-case input prices I could find.
Assumption: 45 t/ha (3k × 15kg pockets) at $6 = $18k gross revenue. That leaves a gross margin of ~$11,518/ha before costs not captured in the TVC.

US$6,000 to grow 1 hectare of potatoes, with potential returns of US$15,000–US$20,000? Ummmmmm 🤔😂

I know absolutely nothing about potato farming, so I'm genuinely curious and would love to learn from those who know this business.

What actually goes into that US$6,000?
Seed, fertiliser, chemicals, labour, water, irrigation, electricity/solar or diesel, harvesting and getting the potatoes from the field to the market?

And what are the biggest risks? Disease? Pests? Water problems? Weather? Electricity? Theft? Or simply the price of potatoes falling when you are ready to sell?

Also, what yield per hectare are we talking about to generate the US$15,000–US$20,000?
And forgive my ignorance on this one 😂, when you say returns of US$15,000–US$20,000, is that the money generated from selling the crop, or what the farmer actually has left muhomwe after all the expenses?

I'm genuinely asking because I'd like to understand how potato farming works. If the numbers make sense, maybe this is something more Zimbabweans should be looking at. 🌱🇿🇼
