Today, even the bottom 40% of households are moving from basic goods to asset-building durables investing into vehicles, mobiles, fridges simply in secondary expenditure. Inequality in key assets is converging, especially in cities.
Can’t emphasis enough to how important this is to understand how new data trends are emerging for India.

The man who owned this line is no longer with us. The news of Shri Gajananrao Mehendale’s demise yesterday in Pune has a void has opened that cannot be filled, for he was not just a historian, he was history’s own witness and interpreter.

From a young age, he was drawn towards the History, joining the Bharat Itihaas Sanshodhak Mandal in 1969. But unlike many who studied history from books, Mehendale witnessed it first hand, during the 1971 Indo-Pak War, he was in Bangladesh as a correspondent, living among Indian soldiers and Mukti Bahini fighters, documenting history as it unfolded before his eyes. Few historians have ever lived so close to the very heartbeat of events.

This devotion to primary sources became the hallmark of his scholarship. His books Shivaji: His Life and Times (English) and Shri Raja Shivchatrapati (Marathi), with over 6,000 original sources, stand as unparalleled works of Maratha historiography. A polyglot, he mastered Persian, Modi Marathi, Sanskrit, Urdu, French, Portuguese, and German, not for prestige, but to ensure no translation diluted the truth of his sources. His books on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj are considered masterpieces, can very well be considered textbooks on Maratha History and his ongoing research on Aurangzeb, Islam, and the Second World War promised to open new horizons.
Today, we grieve, for we have lost a jewel, a man who carried the legacy of V. K. Rajwade, G. S. Sardesai, G. H. Khare and Babasaheb Purandare. Yet, in our grief, we must also look ahead with pride and hope. His philosophy will continue to guide generations. The man is gone, but his legacy will remain a compass for young minds.
A legend has fallen, but the light he kindled will never fade.

मराठा इतिहास को चित्रित करती उनकी कृतियाँ अमूल्य हैं। उन्होंने 1971 के भारत-पाक युद्ध में बांग्लादेश में रहकर भारतीय सैनिकों और मुक्ति वाहिनी के संघर्ष को प्रत्यक्ष देखा और इतिहास में दर्ज किया। मेहेंदले जी के अविस्मरणीय योगदान पीढ़ियों तक मार्गदर्शन करते रहेंगे।
