In recent weeks, over 100 new @SWCSD teachers and support specialists joined our educational team - choosing OUR students and schools as to where they wanted to invest their skills and talents. 👩‍🏫👨‍🏫

Earlier today, Finland Elementary School (FES) students and staff welcomed back one of their fellow Eagles in 4th grader Owen for his first day of in-person schooling this year.

Fourth grader Owen returns to FES after courageously battling Leukemia and undergoing chemotherapy treatments since he was first diagnosed in December 2022. 🎉

Since knowing he was going to be able to return to school, Owen has been watching videos online in which other kids who enter remission and come back to school get these ‘big welcome back celebrations’ and told his mom, "Wouldn't it be cool if this happened to me?" After making that request known to us by his family, our Finland Elementary School staff and the South-Western City School District dove right in to help document his resiliency story and afford him the warm welcome he deserved on Monday!

Accompanied by his mom, dad, brother, and sister, Owen’s wish came true in the video below as students and staff lined the halls to excitedly welcome Owen back to school!

We hope you will join us in welcoming Owen back to Finland Elementary School! We would also like to thank Owen’s family for reaching out to us and including us in his return to school today - we are so glad you are back at school Owen! 👏
