How can you show your students, especially marginalized students, or those whose experiences you may not share, that you see and respect them?
The first step: be proactive.

I spoke a few years ago that I wanted to do a Ted Talk. This summer I was asked to speak to educators that were enrolled in the Ted Talk Master Class. I had a blast. Today, I would like to announce that Ted Ed has released my "Ted Talk" on their website.

Re my last tweet thread: my favorite part of my superintendents email was when he told the community in his parent email to suck it up Re: wearing a mask by saying it was a small sacrifice compared to his family who fought Nazi’s in WWII. Something about that felt especially icky
All of this is to say I truly hope my union decides to take job action. The district office has made their position clear. I understand the value of in person instruction. But I do not understand how it is more valuable than people’s lives (5/5)
I haven’t said much about reopening b/c I’ve been hopeful that my district would eventually do the right thing & go full remote. But last night we received an email pushing back the start of school in order to be able to open with a hybrid model that puts everyone in danger (1/5)
The solution offered to coworkers who need to take a leave for child care reasons? You can enroll them in the district, but it will cost you $6000 (per kid) you probably don’t have! At least you can pay it off over two years... (4/5)
I am so proud of the students standing up to make their demands heard at this meeting (just like I was at the teach in) despite others at the meeting directly calling them uninformed, unprepared, etc. Bravo!
“No student should feel less human than any other regardless of race, ethnicity, country of origin, sexual orientation, etc.” - finally a statement from the superintendent of my district. Hoping there are actions to back up these words.
Grateful for opportunity to listen and learn at the teach-in in Chatham today. We have so much work to do, and I hope my fellow teachers and admin will join me in learning more and committing to doing that work.
Shoutout to Whitney Houston’s greatest hits for accompanying me through docs based writing conferences this morning! Any suggestions for an artist to join me for tomorrow’s set?
